　2度の服役を経て32歳で暴力団を離脱した斎藤さんは、現在、自身の犯した罪についてこう語る。「犯罪は絶対にやってはいけないことですよ。被害者がいるものであれば、特に」。そして続けて、「お金を返したり、渡したらおしまいってわけにもいかない。その人の人生を狂わしちゃったんだから、僕もどう償っていくかを一生背負って、考えていかないとならない」と語った。　暴力団離脱後の更生の道も、決して平坦ではなかった。就職活動では、1か月で40社以上を回っても採用されず、最終的に学芸大学駅前の新聞配達会社だけが雇ってくれた。手取り14万円、共同便所・共同浴室のアパート暮らしからの再スタートだった。

　その後、タクシー運転手、生花業、不動産業と生活を立て直し、事業が軌道に乗って「1日で400万円」が入るようになったころ、「なんか糸がプツッと切れたんです。『何やってんだろう、俺』『金のために生きてんのかな』って」と感じるようになる。　富士山の山頂でご来光を見て、周囲の人々がそれぞれ悩みや苦しみを抱えながら生きていることに気づき、やがて42歳での大学受験という決断へとつながっていく。　現在は司法試験の合格を目指しながら、「恵まれない環境の方たちにも勉強させてあげたい」という思いで更生支援にも力を注ぐ。過去に犯した罪については「それを自身と見つめ合いながら、葛藤し続けて生きていくしかない」と語る斎藤さん。　アルファベットも書けない状態から1日17時間の猛勉強で慶応義塾大学に合格するまでの軌跡や、キャンパスライフの実態については、インタビュー本編で詳しく語られている。〈つづく〉
