楽天モバイル、「最強衛星サービス」26年第4四半期開始
楽天モバイルと米AST SpaceMobileは、4月に日本国内で初めて、低軌道衛星と市販スマートフォン同士のエンドツーエンドでの直接通信によるビデオ通話に成功した。これにより、モバイル通信圏外だった山間部などもカバー可能となる。楽天モバイルは2026年第4四半期(10-12月)の「Rakuten最強衛星サービス」実現に向けて準備を進める。

楽天モバイルとASTは、2020年3月に戦略的パートナーシップを締結し、ASTの低軌道衛星と市販スマートフォンによる直接高速インターネット通(音声・ビデオ通話等)を目指すプロジェクトを進めてきた。
今回の試験では、福島県内に設置した楽天モバイルのゲートウェイ地球局から電波をASTの「BlueBird Block 1」に向けて発信し、衛星を介してスマートフォンが受信。市販のスマートフォン同士で通話アプリを使用し、福島県と東京都間でのビデオ通話を実現し、衛星と市販スマートフォンによる直接通信に成功した。
この試験は、日本国内で市販される一般的なスマホを使用し、実験試験局免許の予備免許を取得した上での事前疎通確認となる。今後、実験試験局免許を取得の上、通信試験を実施予定。
楽天グループと楽天モバイルの三木谷浩史会長は、この取り組みを「携帯業界のアポロ計画」と強調。楽天モバイルの面積カバー率が100%になり、災害大国である日本におけるインフラとして、重要な施策であると強調した。また、「競合(Starlinkと思われる)に比べて衛星が非常に大きい」ことから、テキストや音声だけでなく、データや動画伝送にも有利であると強調した。
