“核融合発電” 開発先行の米企業に日本の大手企業12社が出資
次世代のエネルギー源として世界的に開発競争が激しくなっている核融合発電をめぐり、日本の商社や電力会社など大手企業12社が、開発で先行するアメリカの企業に出資したことが明らかになりました。
核融合発電は、二酸化炭素や高レベル放射性廃棄物を出さない次世代のエネルギー源として期待されていて、世界的に開発競争が激しくなっています。
こうした中、この開発で先行するアメリカの「CFS＝コモンウェルス・フュージョン・システムズ」は3日、都内で会見を開き、三井物産や三菱商事、関西電力、それにNTTなど日本の大手企業12社から出資を受けたと発表しました。
出資額は明らかにしていませんが、関係者によりますと、あわせて数十億円規模に上るということです。
日本企業としては資金や人材などの提供を進めて核融合発電の商業化を後押しするとともに、この分野での技術やノウハウの蓄積を図るねらいがあります。
CFSは、アメリカのマサチューセッツ工科大学発のベンチャー企業として7年前に設立され、2030年代前半の商業運転の開始を目指して開発を進めています。
会見したボブ・マムガードCEOは「核融合を通じた新しい産業の創出には、あらゆる分野のスキルを結集する必要がある。世界で数多くの発電所を建設するにあたって、日本企業が共同で参画したことは非常に重要だ」と述べました。
