「トイレの文化館」4月17日オープン 木製便器や国産初シャワートイレ展示
LIXILが運営する文化施設「INAXライブミュージアム」は、日本のトイレ文化を発信する展示館「トイレの文化館」を4月17日にオープンする。場所は愛知県常滑市、入館料は一般1,000円など。

INAXライブミュージアムは土とやきものの魅力を伝える文化施設。トイレの文化館は、LIXILの水まわり・タイル100周年を記念し、INAXライブミュージアムの7つ目の館として開設する。敷地面積は約732m2、建築面積は約260m2で、1階ピロティが約90m2、2階展示室が約180m2。
木製便器の時代から、華やかに装飾された陶磁器製便器、水洗化を経て和魂洋才の技術的な発展を遂げ、現代のトイレに至る日本のトイレの歩みを、約50点の実物と豊富な資料でたどる。
2階の常設展示室は、清浄性をトイレに求めた日本の精神を背景に、「トイレ」の原点から、西洋の進んだ技術を取り入れて独自に発展し現代に至る日本のトイレの変遷を、時代に沿って一望できるよう設計している。
展示室の見どころとして、江戸時代の絵図面をもとに復元した木製の樋箱(ひばこ)、白地に青で美しい絵付けを施した染付古便器、世界に先駆けて発明された19世紀イギリスの水洗トイレといった貴重なコレクションなどがある。
加えて、国産初の温水洗浄機能付き便器(シャワートイレ)など、日本のトイレ史を飾るエポックメーキングなトイレが並ぶ。
建物は1階がRC造、2階が木造。2階の展示室は木のぬくもりを大切にした空間に仕上げている。2階外壁では、黒い壁板を鎧のように重ねる常滑の伝統的な鎧壁(よろいかべ)を再現。長さ30cmほどの角材があしらわれている。常滑では、窯場から火事が多発したことから、鎧壁を角材と折れ釘で土壁に留め、火事の際には角材を取り払い木製の壁を一気に取り外して延焼を防ぐ工夫がなされていた。
エレベーター棟と周辺の外壁には、タイルの廃棄原料をリサイクルした無釉モザイクタイルを使用。LIXILやきもの工房が監修し、再生原料の混合比率を変えることで4色のタイルを製作している。
また、浴槽などの素材として広く使用され、その多くが埋め立てや焼却処分されているFRPの廃材を塗り壁材にマテリアルリサイクルする新技術を開発。廃FRPを炭化することによって、CO2の排出量を大幅に抑えてリサイクル原料にした壁材を使用し、階段の壁面を仕上げた。
所在地は愛知県常滑市奥栄町1-130。INAXライブミュージアムの共通入館料は一般1,000円、学生800円、中高生500円、小学生250円。休館日は水曜日(祝日の場合は開館)、年末年始。同施設にはそのほか、「窯のある広場・資料館」「世界のタイル博物館」「建築陶器のはじまり館」「土・どろんこ館」「陶楽工房」「やきもの工房」がある。
