ソフトバンクやMetaなど、日本とシンガポールを結ぶ海底ケーブル建設
ソフトバンクはMetaなど4社と、日本とシンガポールを結ぶ国際海底ケーブル「Candle(キャンドル)」の建設に合意し、NECとシステム供給契約を締結したと発表した。ソフトバンク、Meta Platforms、アイ・ピー・エス(IPS)、TM Technology Services Sdn、PT XLSmart Telecom Sejahteraが建設に合意した。
Candleは、日本、台湾、フィリピン、インドネシア、マレーシア、シンガポールを結ぶ総延長約8,000kmの光海底ケーブルで、2028年の運用開始を予定。Candleの建設により、AIや5Gなどの普及で急増するデータ通信需要に対応したインフラの拡充や、冗長ルートの確保を目指す。
Candleのシステムでは、24ファイバーペア構成を採用。これまで光海底ケーブルのシステムは多くても16～20ファイバーペアだったが、24ファイバーペアを採用することで、さらなる大容量・低遅延の通信インフラを構築し、アジア地域の拡大する通信需要に対応する。
ソフトバンクは、Candleの日本の陸揚げ局として、千葉県南房総市に所在する「ソフトバンク丸山国際中継所」を提供。また、海底ケーブル戦略の一環で、北海道(苫小牧市)と九州(福岡県糸島市)に陸揚げ拠点を建設しており、日本各地に陸揚げ拠点を分散配置することで、災害や障害に強い冗長性を確保。国際通信網の強靭化を図る。
また、既設の国際海底ケーブル「JUPITER」や「ADC」、建設中の「E2A」とCandleを組み合わせることで、日本を起点とした国際通信インフラを多様化・冗長化していく。
