AWS、"猫量子"がエラー訂正を効率化する量子チップ「オセロット」
Amazon Web Services (AWS)は、量子エラー訂正の実装コストを最大90%削減できる新しい量子コンピューティングチップ「Ocelot(オセロット)」を発表した。カリフォルニア工科大学のAWS量子コンピューティングセンターのチームが開発したもので、従来のコンピュータでは解決できない商業的、科学的な問題を解決できるフォールトトレラントな量子コンピュータの構築を目指すための画期的な成果としている。

Ocelotは、AWSの量子エラー訂正アーキテクチャの有効性をテストするために設計されたプロトタイプの量子コンピューティングチップ。エラー訂正のための新しいアプローチである「cat qubit(猫量子ビット)」を組み込んで設計されており、名称は「シュレディンガーの猫」の思考実験にちなんで名付けられたもの。これにより特定のエラー形式を抑制し、量子エラー訂正に必要なリソースを削減することが可能になる。
AWSでは、オセロットアーキテクチャによって構築された量子チップは、エラー訂正に必要なリソースを現在の方法の1/5程度のコストに抑えることが可能になるとしており、これにより実用的な量子コンピュータの実現が最大5年短縮されるとしている。
量子コンピュータの最大の課題の一つは環境のわずかな変化、「ノイズ」に敏感であることで、振動や熱、携帯電話やWi-Fiの電波干渉、宇宙放射線なども影響を与える可能性がある。このため、量子エラー訂正の機能は非常に重要になるが、これには法外なコストが必要になってくる。
猫量子ビットは、オセロットにあらかじめ組み込んだ状態で設計しており、これは量子エラー訂正を最優先事項として設計したためだという。AWSは、「実用的な量子コンピュータを作成するなら、量子エラー訂正が最初に必要になる」とコメントしており、将来Ocelotを、本格的な量子コンピュータとして拡張した場合、一般的な量子エラー訂正の仕組みに対して、1/10程度のリソースで実現可能になるとしている。
Ocelotは、14個のコアコンポーネントで構成され、5つのデータ量子ビット(猫量子ビット)、データ量子ビットを安定化するための5つの「バッファ回路」、量子ビットのエラーを検出するための4つの追加の量子ビットを備える。
猫量子ビットは、計算に使用される量子状態を格納する。このためには、タイミングが安定した反復的な電気信号を生成する発振器が必要になる。Ocelotの発振器は、超伝導材料である「Tantalum」の被膜で作られており、この性能を向上させるためシリコンチップ上でTantalumを処理する特殊な方法を開発して実装している。
大手テック企業では、量子チップへの取り組みを進めており、Microsoftは「Majorana 1」を、Googleは「Willow」を発表している。
