スターシップが再び空中分解 ブースターは3度目の回収に成功
SpaceXは、6日(現地時間)、新型宇宙船「Starship Super Heavy(スターシップ/スーパーヘビー)」の8回目となるフライトテストを実施した。打上げ後、分離したスーパーヘビーブースターは3回目の"空中キャッチ"に成功したが、スターシップは飛行中に急速な空中分解を起こし通信が途絶した。

スターシップは1月16日に行なわれた7回目のフライトテストでも空中爆発を起こしていた。原因は、エンジン防火壁上にある空洞部分で発生した燃料漏れからの火災とされているが、SpaceXでは2月24日にこの問題は解決済みと発表されている。
今回は、スターシップはスーパーヘビーブースターとの分離後、上昇中に何らかのエネルギー放出が発生し、複数のラプターエンジンが損傷、これによりスターシップの姿勢制御が失われ、打上げから約9分30秒後、通信が途絶えた。SpaceXが配信したライブ映像でも、スターシップが制御不能に陥り、機体が回転する様子が映っている。

今回のテストでは、スターシップによる初のペイロード展開や、将来、打上げ場所に帰還して空中キャッチするために必要な複数回の再突入実験など、7回目のフライトテストで前回達成できなかった項目を実施する予定だった。
SpaceXでは、今回の試験で得られた知見を活かし、信頼性向上に務めるため、FAAとの調査協力と是正措置を講じながら今後の飛行試験の改善を図るとしている。
