深海探査機「うらしま8000」、深度8000mに到達
海洋研究開発機構(JAMSTEC、ジャムステック)は、深海巡航探査機「うらしま8000」が、国内のAUVとして最深となる深度8,015.8mに到達したと発表した。海底地形データの取得に成功したほか、別の航行では急斜面や長時間の観測航行にも成功している。

「うらしま8000」は7月21日、伊豆・小笠原海溝において、国内で開発された航行型の自律型無人探査機(AUV：Autonomous Underwater Vehicle)として最深となる深度8,015.8mに到達。この潜航時、海底地形と海底下構造データの取得にも成功しており、調査船からは観測できなかった海底谷の細かな地形の把握にも成功した。
また「うらしま8000」は、房総半島沖の拓洋第3海山で急斜面での観測航行に成功。日本海溝では、東北地方太平洋沖地震の震源域近傍において、25時間34分におよぶ長時間観測航行にも成功した。
深海巡航探査機「うらしま」は1998年から開発が始まったAUVで、度々の改修を経て、深海調査に用いられるようになった。2022年からは、潜航深度8,000mを目指す「うらしま8000」として改造が開始され、今回の航行で8,000mという超深海の航行試験に成功した。
海底付近で観測を行なうため、高い解像度で海底地形や海底下構造データを取得できるのが特徴。今後、地震研究をはじめとした海溝域での詳細調査に用いられることが期待されている。
