“川辺でも履ける”アグ®の新作──リース・クーパーが手がけた、都市と自然をシームレスにつなぐデザインとは？
南カリフォルニアを拠点とするグローバルライフスタイルブランド、アグ®（UGG®）が、ロサンゼルスを拠点に活躍するデザイナーであり、学際的アーティストとしても注目されるリース・クーパー（Reese Cooper）とのコラボレーションコレクションを発表した。

本コレクションでは、アグ®のアイコニックなブーツをベースに、CORDURA®やGORE-TEXといったハイテク素材を取り入れ、街からアウトドアまで幅広く対応する2型のフットウェアを展開する。
ロサンゼルスの自然環境やカルチャーが、このコラボレーションにどう影響したのか。そして、彼がアグ®とともに目指したものとは。クーパー本人に訊いた。
どこでも使える多用途のフットウェアを作ることを目指しました。UGG®ブーツに関して一番の課題は、濡れた時の対策でした。なので、まずはその問題を解決することが最初の目標でした。
素材の選択がカギでした。私たちが愛するアグ®のアイコニックなシルエットはそのままに、ほんの少しアウトドアに適した機能性を加えたかったんです。
このアイテムの目的は、皆さんがどこでも履けるものを作ることでした。川辺で泥まみれになった時にも、家でリラックスする時にも履ける靴にしたかったんです。
ロサンゼルスにはさまざまな自然環境があります。どこも家から車で3、4時間で行ける距離でアクセスがいいんです。実は今も砂漠から帰ってきたばかりで、週末には山にフライフィッシングに行く予定です。これだけ多様な自然がすぐ近くにあるというのは本当に特別で、時間があればすぐ外に出かけることができる。そういう体験がデザインに影響を与えるのは、ごく自然なことだと思います。
“トレンド”というより、スマホやSNSに疲れた多くの人たちが、身の回りにある世界を再発見したり、リアルな社会に改めて関心を持ち始めているのだと思います。
他のデザイナーの方もそうだと思いますが、私も日本のファッションからたくさんインスピレーションを受けています。特に惹かれるのは、デザインに込められた実用性と意図。単なる“オシャレ”のためのファッションではなく、実際に使うことを前提に作られている点が素晴らしいと思います。
