NTTら、高度20kmのHAPSとスマホのLTEデータ通信に成功 速度は4.66Mbps
Space CompassとNTTドコモは2月に、ケニア共和国ライキピアカウンティにおいて高度約20kmの成層圏を飛行する高高度プラットフォーム「HAPS」を経由した、LTEによるスマートフォンへの通信実証に成功した。

地上のLTE基地局から送信される電波を高度約20kmの成層圏を飛行するHAPSを経由して、地上のスマートフォンへ伝送する実証実験。地上に設置したLTE基地局を地上ゲートウェイ局に接続し、HAPSに搭載した非再生中継方式と呼ばれる電波を折り返す中継技術を用いた通信装置により、地上のスマートフォンと情報データの送受信を行なった。これにより、地上ゲートウェイ局からHAPSを中継したスマートフォンへの通信(フォワードリンク)で4.66Mbps以上のスループットを確認した。
また、成層圏を旋回するHAPS機体から、一定のエリアに通信カバレッジを形成するために地上の定点にビームの中心を向ける技術を実装し、HAPSから折り返される電波がスマートフォンで正常に受信できることを地上の試験エリアで確認している。高度18km以上の成層圏を飛行する小型固定翼タイプのHAPS機体により地上のスマートフォンと無線でのデータ通信を確立する事に成功したのは世界初。
HAPSは、「High-Altitude Platform Station」の略称で、高度約20km上空の成層圏を数日〜数カ月の長期間に渡って無着陸で飛行できる無人飛行体。機体には中継器などを搭載し、直径100～200km程度のエリア化が可能で、従来エリア化が困難だった空や海上など、採算性の観点からエリア化されていなかった過疎・中山間地域なども対象とすることが検討されている。
HAPSとスマートフォンとの通信においては、ソフトバンクが2020年に基地局機能を搭載するより大型のHAPS「Sunglider(サングライダー)」によりLTEでの通信を行なっていた。今回使用された「Zephyr(ゼファー)」はより小型軽量で、基地局としての機能は搭載せず、受信したLTEの電波を中継する形でスマートフォンとの通信を実現したもの。
「Zephyr」はAALTOが製造・運用する小型固定翼型のHAPS機体で、2022年には無人航空機として最長となる64日間の滞空飛行を実現するなど、優れた飛行実績を有している。
今後もSpace Compassとドコモは、2026年の商用化に向けて開発を推進し、Beyond 5G時代における空・海・宇宙などあらゆる場所への「超カバレッジ拡張」を実現する宇宙RAN(Radio Access Network)の開発に取り組んでいく。
■ HAPSを能登半島で活用するパートナープログラム
NTTドコモとNTT Comは、「能登HAPSパートナープログラム」も開始。石川県能登をフィールドにHAPSを活用したソリューションやさまざまなユースケースの創出をめざすもので、パートナー企業の募集を開始した。
HAPSの特徴である「スマホやIoT機器との直接通信・高速大容量・低遅延」を活かしたビジネスモデルやソリューションの検討、実証実験を行なうもの。2028年度以降に予定している石川県でのHAPS商用飛行時に、検討したソリューションを実装し、通信の強靭化や産業振興に貢献する。
