今回の地震について、地震のメカニズムに詳しい京都大学防災研究所の西村卓也教授は「2016年の熊本地震では布田川断層帯と日奈久断層帯の北側の部分がずれ動いたと言われているが、きょうの地震は日奈久断層帯のうち2016年の地震の時に割れ残っていた部分がずれ動いて発生した可能性が高いと考えられる。震源が浅く非常に大きな揺れを伴った地震で、特に震源の周辺は平野部も多く、比較的揺れやすい地盤のため、さまざまな被害が発生していると思われる」と指摘しました。

そのうえで、今後の地震活動について「今回ずれ動いたと考えられる日奈久断層帯は非常に長い断層で、断層の南側にはまだ動いていない部分がある可能性があるほか、周辺には活断層が数多くある。このため、今回と同じ程度の地震が再び発生する可能性はゼロではないため、今後1週間程度は注意しておいてほしい」と述べました。
