ことしのノーベル平和賞に選ばれたナビ・ピレイ氏が、オランダのハーグにあるICC＝国際刑事裁判所を訪れて赤根智子所長らと面会し、アメリカによる制裁対象への指定を受けて困難な状況に直面する職員たちを激励しました。

2003年から2008年までICCの裁判官を務めたナビ・ピレイ氏は12日、オランダのハーグにある裁判所の本部を訪問し、赤根所長や職員たちと面会しました。

この中で、ピレイ氏は「職員の思いやりや勇気で、罪を犯しても処罰されない状態を許さない取り組みが続けられている」と述べ、戦争犯罪などを裁くICCの役割の重要性を強調し、職員たちを激励しました。

ICCをめぐっては、アメリカのトランプ政権が今月9日、赤根所長に続いてICCそのものを制裁対象に指定したと発表しています。

赤根所長はノーベル平和賞に選ばれたピレイ氏に祝意を示し、「恒久的な平和の礎として国際司法が果たす極めて重要な役割が認められた」と強調しました。

ピレイ氏は、今月10日に行われたノーベル平和賞に関連する催しでもICCを取り巻く状況に危機感を示していて、アメリカを念頭に、「ある国がICCの裁判官が下した司法判断を理由に制裁を発表したことは前代未聞で容認できない」などと強く非難しています。
