屋外ビル間もミリ波エリア化 KDDIなど液晶反射板活用で実証
KDDIとKDDI総合研究所、ジャパンディスプレイ(JDI)は、液晶反射板でミリ波を反射させ、屋外ビル間をエリア化する実証に2月25日に成功した。これにより、ビルや建物の遮蔽で電波が届きにくい場所や、人が密集するイベントでも柔軟にミリ波を届け、高速で安定した大容量通信を提供可能としていく。

5Gで利用する「ミリ波」などの高い周波数の電波は、高速で大容量の通信が可能だが、直進性が強いためビルや樹木の影響を受けやすい特徴がある。そのため、ビル間通路など電波が届きにくいエリアにおいては、反射方向を切り替えてピンポイントに電波を届けられる手段が必要となっている。
3社は電波の反射方向・範囲を変更できる可搬型のミリ波(28GHz帯)用液晶メタサーフェス反射板を開発。低消費電力という特徴を活かし、汎用品の太陽光パネルとバッテリーで、液晶反射板が駆動することも確認した。
液晶反射板のサイズは、約50×50cm四方、重量は約8kg。スマートフォンでON/OFF、散乱パターンの変更などの制御が行なえる。
実証実験は、東京新宿の西新宿地区で2024年12月21日から2025年3月31日まで実施。実証の結果から、液晶反射板を活用して、人の往来や通路の幅に合わせて柔軟にミリ波のエリアを構築することが可能であることを確認した。また、太陽光パネル・バッテリー給電での駆動を確認できたため、屋外のイベント会場などでの活用も期待できるとする。
