北海道で約30年前に発見された恐竜化石が、新属新種のヨロイ竜類だと判明しました。北海道大学のプレスリリースによると、その名は「ニッポノペルタ・エゾエンシス」。ヨロイ竜類の新属新種が日本から命名されるのは、今回が初めてです。

北海道大学などの研究グループが再研究したのは、1995年に北海道夕張市で発見された、約1億年前の恐竜化石です。 CTスキャンを使って岩石に埋もれていた骨を調べたところ、他のノドサウルス類には見られない特徴の組み合わせが確認され、新属新種と判断されました。学名は「ニッポノペルタ・エゾエンシス（Nipponopelta yezoensis）」。「Nippon」は日本、「pelta」は「盾」、「yezo」は北海道の旧称「蝦夷」に由来し、「北海道で見つかった日本の盾」という意味が込められています。

全身を覆うゴツゴツとした鎧や、首から肩にかけて伸びる鋭いスパイクが印象的。ずっしりとした体つきも相まって、まるで全身を武装したような、カッコいい姿です。系統解析の結果、ニッポノペルタは北米やヨーロッパのノドサウルス類と近縁であることが判明。ノドサウルス類は、異なる系統が複数回にわたってアジアへ進出していたと考えられるといいます。また、ニッポノペルタを含むグループは海に近い環境で暮らす傾向があり、その生態が大陸間の移動や分布拡大につながった可能性も示されました。研究グループは、「海の近くで暮らす」という生態が、大陸間を移動して分布域を広げるうえで重要な役割を果たした可能性があるとしています。
