素粒子の1つ「ニュートリノ」は、宇宙の歴史を通じて星の爆発によって放出され、今も宇宙に蓄積されていると考えられていますが、その存在を示す“兆候”を初めて捉えたと、東京大学などの国際研究グループが発表し、宇宙の進化を解明する手がかりになると期待されています。

星が一生を終えるときに「超新星爆発」が起きると、素粒子の一つ「ニュートリノ」が放出されることが知られていて、その後は宇宙に蓄積していくと考えられています。

こうしたニュートリノは「超新星背景ニュートリノ」と呼ばれ、観測に成功すれば宇宙の進化を解明する手がかりになるとされていますが、その信号は極めて弱く、これまで観測は困難とされてきました。

東京大学などの国際研究グループは、岐阜県にある研究施設「スーパーカミオカンデ」の性能を向上させ、およそ5000日分の観測データを詳しく解析した結果、「超新星背景ニュートリノ」の“兆候”を初めて捉えたと発表しました。

研究グループによりますと、確実に観測できたと認められるためには、さらなるデータの蓄積と解析の改善が必要で、今後も観測を続けるとしています。

東京大学の関谷洋之准教授は「超新星背景ニュートリノを観測できるようになれば、私たちの身のまわりに存在する元素の源となる超新星爆発の発生頻度などを明らかにできる。引き続き研究に取り組みたい」などと話しています。
