なぜ“角ゼット”は人気なのか？ カワサキ Z1-Rの価値を考える
1970年〜80年代に発売された国産旧車が、“絶版車”と呼ばれ人気だ。当時憧れていた世代はもちろんのこと、今どきのヤングライダーたちも“カッコいい！”と注目する絶版旧車の魅力を、俳優の飯島寛騎と元バイク雑誌編集長・カワニシが語り合う。今回はひときわ人気の高い“角ゼット”が登場！

河西啓介（以下、カワニシ）：飯島寛騎くん、1970〜80年代の絶版旧車に試乗してもらおうというこの企画ですが、なんだか今回は、ちょっと目の色が違うような……。
飯島寛騎（以下、飯島）：実は僕的に、このバイクが“本命”なんです。カワサキZ1-Rですよ！ カッコよすぎませんか？ 見た瞬間、思わず舐めまわしたくなりました。
カワニシ：舐めまわすって……テンション上がりすぎです（笑）。そういえば寛騎くんの愛車はカワサキZ500FXですね。つまりこのZ1-Rと同時代のカワサキ車。ということは、この時代の“四角い”カワサキがドンズバの好みだと。
飯島：そうなんです。Z1とかZ2の丸みを帯びたデザインも魅力的だと思うんですが、僕は角ばっているZ1-Rのほうが好きなんですよね。
カワニシ：ファンのあいだではそれぞれ「丸Z」と、「角Z」と、呼ばれていますね。主に燃料タンクの形状が丸みを帯びているか、角ばっているかという違いですが、丸Zとは1972年に発売されたZ1からZ900、Z1000までを指し、角Zは78年登場のZ1-RからZ1-RⅡ、Z1000Mk-Ⅱなど。国内モデルだとゼッツーなどが丸Zで、FXシリーズが角Zですね。いずれにしても飯島さんが生まれるよりだいぶ前のバイクだけど、どうして好きになったんですか？
飯島：きっかけは『特攻の拓』とか、ヤンキー系漫画の影響ですね。硬派でカッコいいなと。なかでもZ1-Rは大ボスが乗っているバイクってイメージで、僕なんかにはまだ早い、おこがましいって感じです。憧れだから、乗らなくても、家に飾っておくだけでもいいんです。
カワニシ：僕がバイク雑誌で編集長をしていたとき、俳優の江口洋介さんと愛車のZ1-Rを撮影したことがあるんですけど、撮影現場までZ1-Rに乗ってきた江口さん、いやあかっこよかった。似合っていたなあ。
