SpaceXは8日、米国において800MHz帯を使った全国規模の通信をカバーする権利を取得すると発表した。FCC(連邦通信委員会)からの最終承認が必要だが、Starlink Mobileを米国におけるモバイル通信事業者と位置づけて強化していく。
米国で携帯電話向けに利用できる800MHz帯、最大14MHz幅(ペア)の周波数をGrain Managementから取得。Starlink Mobileにおいて、衛星からモバイル端末への通信コンステレーションと、地上設備を組み合わせて展開する。
2GHz帯で大容量の通信を提供しながら、新たな800MHz帯では、Starlink Mobileの信号が壁などの障害物を透過し、利用者が建物内にいる場合でもサービスを利用できるようにするなど、安定した通信環境の提供を見込む。また、多くのモバイル端末はすでにこの周波数帯に対応している。
