9月15日、ボルボは、欧米市場向けに新しい「XC90」を発表した。ボルボのCEOであるホーカン・サムエルソンが「当社のプレミアムな旅の始まりを告げたモデル」と語るように、XC90はボルボ・ブランドの高級化を牽引してきた重要なフラッグシップSUVである。今回の改良で、ロングレンジ・プラグインハイブリッドモデルへと進化を遂げた。

新しいXC90は、フロアに統合された大容量の新型バッテリーとより強力な電気モーターを搭載したことで、1回の充電で最大160kmの電気航続距離を実現。この数値は従来のプラグインハイブリッドモデルと比較して2.5倍以上にあたるという。また、電気自動車ならではの静かで洗練された走りを提供する一方で、より大きなパワーが必要な場面やバッテリー残量が少なくなった際にはガソリンエンジンが適切に駆動を引き継ぐため、長距離の家族旅行などでも航続距離への不安を感じることはない。なお、同モデルは引き続きマイルドハイブリッド仕様も選択することが可能だ。

デジタル面での利便性も大きく向上しており、新しいXC60と同様に次世代AIアシスタントである「Google Gemini」が新たに搭載された。これにより、ドライバーは車内において日常的な自然言語を用いた直感的な操作が可能となっている。また、すべての最新のボルボ車と同様にOTA（Over-the-Air）による定期的なソフトウェアアップデートに対応しているため、時間が経つにつれて車両の機能が継続的にアップデートされ、さらに優れた車へと進化していく仕組みが整えられている。新しいXC90はブラックエディションを含め、一部の市場において発表日と同日よりすでに受注が開始されているという。実際の生産は2026年秋の後半より順次開始される予定だ。
