NTTドコモは、衛星・スマートフォンの直接通信サービス「docomo Starlink Direct」について、Starlink Japanと次世代衛星「Starlink Mobile V2」の契約に合意した。この提携により、スターリンクを使った、音声通話、ブラウジングなど高速インターネット、IoTデバイスとの直接通信サービスなどを2028年度に提供開始する。
docomo Starlink Directは、スターリンクを使った衛星通信サービス。4月27日の提供以来、「ahamo」を含むす各料金プラン契約者に申し込み不要・無料で利用可能としており、利用者は3カ月で650万人を突破した。
今回の提携により、これまでのテキストメッセージの送受信や一部アプリの利用だけでなく、音声通話やブラウジング機能にも対応可能となる。また、IoT対応により、山間部や離島、海上など通信環境の確保が難しい場所でも、データ収集や遠隔監視などの活用範囲の拡大が見込めるという。
なお、法人向けのサービス提供は、NTTドコモビジネスで取り扱う予定。
