NTTドコモは、衛星通信サービス「docomo Starlink Direct」の国際ローミング接続を、米国、フィリピン、カナダで開始した。まず「Samsung Galaxy Zシリーズ」3機種が対応し、9月中に対象機種を追加する。今後も対応国・対応機種は順次拡大する。
これにより、日本からの渡航者が多い3カ国において、国立公園や山岳地帯、海岸など、通常のモバイル通信がつながりにくい場所でも、Starlink衛星を介した通信が利用できるようになる。天気予報や地図、位置情報などをスマートフォンで確認できるほか、災害発生時には家族などとの通信手段として活用することも想定されている。
「ahamo」を含む対象料金プランの契約者なら、申し込み不要・追加料金なしで利用できる。対応機種で設定を有効にしておけば、渡航先の対応エリアで地上の通信が難しい場合に自動でStarlink衛星へ接続する。
