電話ボックスをWi-Fiスポットに 東京都とNTT東が主要駅など1500カ所整備
東京都は、公衆電話ボックスを活用した公衆Wi-Fiの整備でNTT東日本と協力すると発表した。公衆電話ボックスを活用し、都内の主要駅周辺や公園などにWi-Fiを3年間で約1,500カ所整備する。国際規格のOpenRoaming(オープンローミング)に対応し、安全で使いやすい公衆Wi-Fiの実現を目指す。

東京都の「つながる東京」展開方針に基づき、災害時やインバウンド対応などを想定し、OpenRoaming対応の公衆Wi-FIを都内に整備。そのためにNTT東日本の公衆電話ボックスを活用する。
公衆電話ボックスは、これまでも災害時の通信手段としての役割を果たしてきたが、Wi-Fiスポットとしての役割も加えることで、東京都内で誰もがインターネットにアクセスできるフェーズフリーな通信環境を実現するという。
3年で都内1,500カ所にOpenRoaming対応の公衆Wi-Fiを整備するほか、利用拡大に向けた普及啓発や、NTT東日本の防災研究所を活用した通信環境等の災害対応力強化などでも協力する。
OpenRoaming対応Wi-Fiを整備した電話ボックスには、専用のステッカーを貼付し、外からも判別可能とする。また、東京都ではこの取り組み以外でも公衆Wi-Fi整備を進め、3,600カ所まで拡大予定。
