NTTドコモは、電話番号だけでテキストメッセージと写真・動画などを送受信できるメッセージサービス「RCS」を26年夏から開始する。また、企業と個人が相互にメッセージなどのやり取りができる「RCS公式アカウント」も、26年冬に開始予定としている。「RCS」は、従来のSMSで利用できるテキストメッセージに加え、写真や動画、スタンプなどのコンテンツの送受信が可能になるほか、グループチャット機能も利用できる。 RCSは、対応するメッセージアプリにて無料で利用可能となる。なお、ドコモ回線のMVNOの利用者についても、今後対応予定としている。ドコモはAndroidスマホの標準メッセージアプリを、3月以降の発売機種から、従来の「+メッセージ」から「Google メッセージ」に変更。RCS対応を強化するとしていた。RCSについては12日に、GoogleとAppleがGSMAと協力し、RCSにエンドツーエンド暗号化を導入する取り組みを行なうことも発表している。
