大谷翔平、グランドセイコーのグローバルパートナーに
セイコーウオッチは、高級腕時計ブランド「グランドセイコー」のグローバルパートナーとして、大谷翔平選手とパートナーシップを結んだと発表した。
発表の中でセイコーは、「両者に共通するのは、一瞬一瞬に誠実に向き合う姿勢」とし、パートナーシップは両者で「時の質を磨き続けていく取り組み」と位置付けている。2026年から「The Grand Moments プロジェクト」がスタートし、両者の姿勢を世界に向けて発信していく。
セイコーは10年にわたり「SEIKO」ブランドのイメージキャラクターとして大谷選手を起用しており、さまざまな広告に大谷選手が登場、腕時計の“大谷翔平モデル”も展開されている。
一方、2022年には、前年のMVP受賞を記念して「グランドセイコー」(SLGH005)が贈呈されている。これは大谷選手の出身地である岩手県で製造されるモデルだった。また大谷選手は、ロサンゼルス・ドジャースへの入団会見でグランドセイコーの「SBGJ217」(当時すでに生産終了)を装着していたことも知られている。
グランドセイコーと大谷選手による「The Grand Moments プロジェクト」がスタートするにあたり、「グランドセイコー Evolution 9 Collection スプリングドライブ U.F.A.モデル」(SLGB003)を着けた大谷選手の写真が公開されている。
SLGB003は、自動巻のスプリングドライブ・ムーブメント「キャリバー9RB2」を搭載し、年差±20秒(平均月差±3秒相当)という非常に高い精度を誇るのが特徴。1969年発売の特別調整モデル「グランドセイコー V.F.A」(Very Fine Adjusted)にちなみ、「U.F.A」(Ultra Fine Accuracy)という特別な名前が付けられている。樹氷をテーマにしたダイヤルも特徴で、日本の美意識を融合させた、ブランドの真髄を結集したモデルとしている。
