ソニーのテレビ、回収テレビから背面カバー素材を水平リサイクル
ソニーは、使用済みテレビの背面カバーから回収したプラスチックを、ソニーのテレビ「ブラビア」の新商品に再利用する「水平リサイクル」を実用化する。

水平リサイクルは、使用済み製品から回収した材料を同種の新製品の原料として再利用する循環型のリサイクル。今回の取り組みは、指定回収工場が使用済みテレビから回収したプラスチックを、難燃性再生プラスチックSORPLAS(ソープラス)の原材料の一部として新たに使用することで実現する。
SORPLASを活用した水平リサイクルは、4K有機ELテレビBRAVIA 8(2024年発売モデル)の65型モデルで初採用し。2025年内に全世界向けに出荷開始する。
これまで、使用済みテレビから回収する背面カバーには多種多様なプラスチックが使用されており、強度や質感の違いから新商品への直接の再利用は困難だった。今回、ブラビアの設計部門とソニーセミコンダクタソリューションズのSORPLAS開発チームが連携し、テレビへの再利用に適した部材の選別技術と最適な材料混合法を開発。この技術により、メーカーを問わず使用済みテレビの背面カバーから特定のプラスチックを回収、選別し、原材料の一部として再利用しながら、従来のSORPLASと変わらない品質を維持している。
SORPLASは、耐衝撃性、耐熱性、透明性に優れたポリカーボネートで、2014年から事業展開している。すでにデジタルカメラやテレビなど多くのソニー製品で活用されているほか、ACアダプタやバッテリパック、スーツケース、OA機器の筐体など他社の製品にも多く活用されている。また、超高耐燃、超耐衝撃、剛性難燃、汎用など用途にあわせたラインナップ展開を行なっている。
特徴は、独自難燃剤「PSS-K」を活用することで、少ない添加量で高い難燃性能を実現できること。そのため、回収ディスクやヘッドランプなどの再生材料の比率を高められる。ソニーをはじめとする製品メーカーでは、石油系資源使用量の削減とGHG(温室効果ガス)排出量低減を進めており、リサイクルプラスチックの利用拡大は急務になっており、SORPLASには高いニーズがあるという。
本来は、ソニー製のテレビからSORPLAS製のリアカバーをリサイクルし、原料として使用するのが望ましいが、回収数量の問題などで難しい。そこで今回、家電リサイクル工場で回収されるテレビのリアカバーを他社テレビを含めて選別し、異樹脂の除去などを行なった後、“ブレンド”して利用するプロセスを確立。これにより、現行SORPLASとほぼ同等物性を実現し、実際にテレビに採用した。
テレビの採用にあたり、既存のSORPLASから劣る部分はなく、「必要なスペックは全て満たしている」としており、コスト面でもテレビの価格に影響するような違いはないという。
今回の発表は、4月22日の「アースデイ(地球の日)」を記念したもの。将来的には、SORPLASを採用した背面カバーを回収・再利用する「クローズドリサイクル」(使用済み商品を新商品の原料として再利用する完全循環型のリサイクル)の実現を目指す。
