『GQ JAPAN』が毎月ひとつのキーワードをもとに、アートの展覧会やイベントをセレクトし紹介する連載がスタート。8月〜9月は「メディアがつくる世界」をテーマに、映像や音響、インスタレーションを駆使した4つの展覧会をピックアップ。進化するメディアアートの最前線に触れてみたい。

映像インスタレーションやプロジェクションの道を切り拓いたマルチメディアアーティスト、トニー・アウスラーの日本初となる大規模個展。彼は映像や彫刻、音、光、言葉を融合したインスタレーションを通して、テクノロジーと人間心理、科学や魔術、霊性といったテーマを探究してきた。展示では初期の代表作から本展のための新作、未発表作に加え、創作の源泉となったアーカイブ資料も展示。AI時代にも通じるアウスラーの先見性と、メディアをめぐる思考の軌跡をたどる。

2022年から毎年開催している長期展示「ICC アニュアル」。生成AIの発展によって情報が膨大な速度で生み出され、流通する現代を背景に、「遺す／残る／受けとめる」をテーマに据える。ウー・チーユーやローサ・メンクマン、SUGAI KENら10組の作品を通して、歴史と技術、メディアの関係を考察。記録や記憶は誰によって、どのように選ばれ、受け継がれるのか。デジタル時代における「遺す」という行為を多角的な視点から捉え直し、歴史や記憶のあり方をあらためて問いかける。

ビデオ・アートの先駆者であるナム・ジュン・パイクの没後20年を記念する展覧会。1963年にメディアアートの先駆的な作品を発表して以来、テレビや映像を表現媒体として新たな芸術の可能性を切り拓いてきた。本展では代表作に加え、未公開のコラージュやドローイング、映像、立体作品などを展示。ブラウン管からAIへと技術が進化した現在だからこそ、ナムジュン・パイクが見据えていたメディアと人間の未来を、あらためて考える機会となる。

坂本龍一のアルバム『async』を起点に、高谷史郎の映像とZAKによる立体音響で構成されたインスタレーション作品《async - immersion》。2023年の〈AMBIENT KYOTO〉で大きな反響を呼んだ本作を、横幅26.4メートルの巨大スクリーンを用いた同規模のスケールで再展示する。音楽と映像、音響が刻々と関係を変化させる没入空間のなかで、観ることと聴くことの境界を揺さぶる体験へと誘う。
