本物にしか見えない……。鳥のかぶり物を自作→100キロ近く歩いた男性が話題。その目的とは？
イギリス・ヨークシャー地方にあるニダーデール国立景観地で、1人の男性が手作りの“鳥のかぶり物”で約85キロメートルを歩いた。その目的に注目が集まっている。

ニダーデール国立景観地の職員として勤めるマット・トレベリアンさんは、2017年に始まった毎年4月21日の「World Curlew Day」に合わせ、20〜21日の2日間で、同景観地の周辺約85キロメートルを練り歩いた。
ウォーキングの“相棒”は、高さ約3メートルのダイシャクシギ（Eurasian Curlew）のかぶり物。準絶滅危惧種に指定されている同種の保護を訴えるため、マットさんは企画を始めた。マットさんのSNSには、かぶり物の制作過程が、事細かに明かされている。
竹やポリスチレンを使って、大好きなダイシャクシギを見事に再現したマットさん。BBCの取材に「あんなにうつくしい鳥だからこそ、上手に再現したかった」と制作の経緯を話す。
マットさんによれば、ダイシャクシギ固有数減少には、生息地の喪失、土地利用の変化、気候変動など、さまざまな要因が絡むという。
「固有数の減少を食い止めるには、毎年少なくとも1万羽以上のヒナが羽化する必要があります。 適切な支援があれば、私たちはともに流れを変えることができます」
自身のインスタグラムでこう発信し、コメント欄には「なんて素晴らしい」「感動した」「我々の貴重な野生生物のことを気にかけてくれてありがとう！」など称賛の声が上がっている。
