太平洋戦争で米軍兵士持ち帰った日の丸旗 大分の遺族に返還
太平洋戦争の戦地からアメリカ軍の兵士が持ち帰った日の丸の旗が、大分県竹田市出身の男性の遺品だとわかり、80年の時を経て遺族に返還されました。
返還された日の丸の旗は、太平洋戦争中の1945年1月に、フィリピンのルソン島で戦死した竹田市出身の工藤文夫さんの遺品です。
工藤さんの名前のほか、「武運長久」の文字や、近所の人の名前などが日の丸を囲むように書かれています。
この旗の返還式が12日に竹田市で行われ、旗を持ち帰ったアメリカ軍兵士のひ孫、クリス・ドーシーさんから、工藤さんのおいの賢さんに手渡されました。
ドーシーさんは6年前、祖父の遺品の1つとして旗を譲り受け、2024年秋ごろ、アメリカのボランティア団体に返還したいと申し出たということです。
その後、依頼を受けた遺族会などが調査した結果、2024年12月に工藤さんのものであることがわかったということです。
式のあと、出席者たちは市内にある工藤さんの慰霊碑を訪れ、80年の時を経て日の丸の旗が返還されたことを報告し、手を合わせていました。
ドーシーさんは「絶対に返さないといけないと思っていたので、遺族に渡すことができて感激しています」と話していました。
また、工藤賢さんは「叔父とは面識もなく遺品もほとんどないため、旗を受け取って、ようやく叔父が帰ってきたという実感が湧きました」と話していました。
