弘前大学は、9月2日に公式サイトやXで「世界遺産白神山地で幻の『ミズラモグラ』を発見！」と題し、プレスリリースを掲載。写真には、まるまるとした楕円形の体に短い鼻や手足、やや細長い尻尾がついたミズラモグラの標本が写っています。ふわふわの毛並みは触り心地が良さそうで、まるでぬいぐるみのように見えます。発表された論文「白神山地におけるミズラモグラ Oreoscaptor mizura の初記録」によると、この個体は全長10.9cmで、前足は爪を含めて1.75〜1.8cm、後足は1.95〜2cm、尾長は2.3cmです。この個体が発見されたことにより、これまで確認記録がない秋田県を含めた白神山地全域に分布する可能性が示唆されたとしています。

弘前大学のミズラモグラの投稿には「え、本物？ぬいぐるみにしか見えない」「フォルムがちいかわみたい」「初めて知りました！しかも幻とは！！」「なんだその取ってつけたような手足は」「ぬいぐるみじゃなくて実物？本当にこんなにまるまるしているの？」などの声が寄せられ、キュートな見た目に注目が集まりました。 BuzzFeed Japanは、論文の著者の一人である弘前大学農学生命科学部のムラノ千恵助教に話を聞きました。ムラノ助教によると、この個体は中村教授が、市民参加のイベントのために、ブナ林散策道を歩いた際に発見したもので、「腐敗臭などもなく、おそらく死亡してそれほど時間が経っていない」状態だったのだとか。また、青森県内ではこれまでに20個体程度のミズラモグラが確認されており、比較的記録の多い地域のようですが、そのほとんどが八甲田山系（青森県の中央にある山脈）での確認だったそうです。
