9月18日、TOYOTA GAZOO Racing(以下、TGR)は、「GRカローラ」の一部改良モデルを発表した。
今回の改良で、構造用接着剤の塗布をプラス13.9m延長した。国内サーキットに比べ、強烈な上下左右Gが発生する海外のサーキットでも安定した走行を実現するためだ。
具体的には、フロントボディ、フロア、リヤホイールハウス付近を中心に、構造用接着剤の塗布量を32.7mにした。質量増加を最小限に抑えながら、より高剛性なボディに仕上げたという。
長時間の全開走行でエンジンルーム内温度が上昇した場合でも、安定して高いエンジン出力を維持させるため、エンジンが高回転時に作動する2次吸気口(エアクリーナー下方に配置)にクールエアダクトを追加。
このクールエアダクトは、フロントグリルから直接外気を取り込むため、吸気空気温度を大幅に下げる効果をもたらし、高負荷連続走行などの高温環境下でも出力を安定させるという。
メーカーオプションのJBLプレミアムサウンドシステムは、機能を充実。ラゲッジに新たに搭載したサブウーハーによって、オーディオサウンドはよりクリアで迫力のある音響を実現。従来から装備していたアクティブノイズコントロール(ANC)のチューニングも最適化し、エンジンなどの不快なこもり音を低減する。
JBLプレミアムサウンドシステム装着車には新たにアクティブサウンドコントロール(ASC)も装備した。
アクセルやシフト操作による車両の加減速や駆動力の変化に応じたスポーツサウンドをスピーカーから鳴動させることで、ドライバーは直感的に車両の状態を把握可能という。さらにアクセルオフ時はバブリング音(ターボラグを低減するため、排気の工程で爆発を起こさせるアンチラグ制御が作動しているときに発生する排気音)を発生させる。ASCは走行モードに合わせて3パターンのサウンドを設定し、3段階の音量設定のほか、「OFF」も選択可能だ。
新しいGRカローラの価格は6MTが¥5,680,000、GR-DAT（8AT）が¥5,980,000。いずれも駆動方式は4WDだ。より多くのユーザーに届けるべく、供給体制も見直したという。また、すでにGRカローラを所有するユーザー向けに、ソフトウェアを含めたアップグレードプログラムを提供する予定だ。
