日本初、民間企業の月面探査車「YAOKI」が月面に到達
ダイモンは、同社が開発する月面探査車「YAOKI」が、日本の民間企業として初めて月面に到達して稼働した月面探査車となったこと発表した。「YAOKI」を搭載したIntuitive Machinesの月着陸船「Nova-C」(通称:Athena)が、日本時間3月7日未明に月面軟着陸に成功したことをうけて発表されたもの。

Athenaは、着陸には成功したものの姿勢が正常ではなく、横転していると思われる状態。Intuitive Machinesとしては2回目の月面軟着陸成功となり、3月2日のブルーゴーストに続く民間企業の月着陸船としては3例目。今回のミッション(IM-2)は、将来の月探査を可能にするために、水資源探索のインフラを検証し、利用可能な資源の組成や濃度を特定し、月面通信技術を実証することを目的としている。
今回は、Athenaの姿勢が予定通りではないことから、月着陸船の最大活動時間を考慮しIntuitive Machinsから各ペイロードに、それぞれのミッションを着陸直後から短時間で遂行する指示が発せられた。
このため、YAOKIは着陸後約5日後に計画していたミッションを、着陸直後に実行するよう変更。Athenaに搭載されている全ペイロードの最後にミッションを実施した。本来はAthenaから分離して活動する予定だったが、着陸船からの電力供給ができないため断念した。
YAOKIの運用は3月7日2時17分51秒(UTC)に開始され、最後のコマンド送信は4時32分30秒(UTC)に実施。2時間以上にわたりデータの送信を行なった。また、最終コマンド送信時点でYAOKIのバッテリー残量は4時間以上あることを確認している。
これにより電力供給の制限や、温度の低温化など環境が悪化する状況下で、月面での写真撮影・データ送信に成功し、月面で予定していた所定の動作が正常に作動することを確認している。
YAOKIは、小型軽量な月面探査車で、将来的に月面基地建設や有人活動を支援するプラットフォームとしての役割を想定している。
民間企業による月面着陸の試みついては、ispaceのHAKUTO-Rが2023年4月26日に挑戦したが、着陸船は月面に衝突。通信が途絶えた。ispaceでは2回目のミッションに向けて2025年1月に「RESILIENCEランダー」の打上げに成功しており、6月に2回目の月面着陸を試みる予定。
