ポールスターの電動スポーツカーが量産モデルに。ただし、あの“ドローン”は搭載されず
ボルボの高級EVブランド「ポールスター」が、電動スポーツカー「ポールスター6」を発表した。ほぼコンセプトモデルの通りのデザインで登場した高性能なオープンカーだが、話題になった機能が量産モデルには搭載されていない。それは自撮り用のドローンだ。

ボルボの高級EVブランド「ポールスター」が電動開閉式のハードトップを備えたスポーツカーのコンセプトモデルを発表したのは、2022年4月のことである。
ちょっとした仕掛けが特徴だったこのコンセプトモデルは「O2」という名称で、高品質なEVで定評のあるポールスターからの新モデルだけに実現可能性が大いに注目された。ただし、車体の後方から飛び出す自撮り用のドローンについては、非現実的と見られていたのである。
このコンセプトモデルについて、いいニュースと悪いニュースがある。まず最初にいいニュースは、ポールスターが「O2」を「Polestar 6（ポールスター6）」という名称で量産化すると発表したこと。そして悪いニュースは、ドローンがお蔵入りになったということだ。
ポールスター6は、2026年に納車予定となっている。スケジュール通りに進めば、ポールスターにとってこの5年で4つ目の新モデルとなる。なお、23年にはクーペタイプの電動SUV「ポールスター4」が登場し、24年には4ドア電動クーペ「ポールスター5」が続く予定だ。
すでにポールスターは「6」の予約を受け付けており、予約するには少なくとも25,000ドル（約335万円）の手付金と、最終的には残額の約20万ドル（約2,700万円）を支払う必要がある。それなりの価格になるが、相応の重要な機能や性能が与えられている。すでにポールスター5で採用が決まっている800Vの高性能な電動アーキテクチャーを採用し、ヒュンダイとキアによる既存の急速充電プラットフォームに対応する予定なのだ。
オープンタイプのスポーツカーであるだけに、ポールスター6にスピードを求めて当然だろう。このモデルはデュアルモーターを搭載し、最大出力が650kW（約884ps）で最大トルクは900Nm、静止状態から時速100kmまでの加速が3.2秒、そして最高時速は時速155マイル（同約250km）を目指している。
この数値は時速60マイル（同約96km）までの加速が1.9秒で最高時速255マイル（同約410km）を謳うテスラの新型「ロードスター」には及ばない。だが、ボルボならではの生産品質が見込まれると同時に、予想される性能を納車予定日にきちんと楽しむことができるはずだ。
小ぶりながらもリアシートを備える22タイプで、理論的には8歳以上なら後部にも座れるはずだ。ボディにはアルミニウム接着構造プラットフォームが採用されている。これは従来型のボディのように金属板をつなぐために用いる最大4,000個のリベットをなくし、代わりに接着剤とオーブンによる硬化を採用した技術だ。
結果的に車体剛性が向上し、よりダイナミックな走りを実現することができたという。かっちりとしたハンドリングと優れたロールダンピング、機敏に反応するステアリングなど、オープンタイプのスポーツカーとして歓迎される要素ばかりだ。
ポールスターは「6」の量産規模について、「数十万台ではなく数万台を予定している」と説明している。この点では1,500台限定だったハイブリッドスポーツカー「ポールスター1」のような少量生産とは異なる。ただし、最初の500台は「LA Concept」エディションとなり、コンセプトモデル「O2」で採用されていたスカイブルーの外装色とライトレザーの内装、専用の21インチホイールが装備される予定だ。
車体後方から飛び立つドローンについてポールスターは、「O2」が「将来の意欲的なアイデアを示すために設計された」コンセプトカーであり、「自律飛行型のシネマティックドローンは生産されない」と説明している。
これに対して西イングランド大学の航空電子工学・航空機システムのシニア・リサーチフェローのスティーヴ・ライトは、3月の時点でドローンの実現性に懐疑的な見解を示していた。
「わたしはポールスターが走行中の車両の後部からドローンを飛び立たせることができるだろうと思っていますよ。車両後部にドローンを着陸させて、機体を回収できることを信じても構いません」と、ライトは語っている。「でも、このドローンを開発したエンジニアは、どうやらわたしよりはるかに賢いようです。物理法則を曲げる方法を発見したことになるわけですから」
「まず、プロペラが小さすぎます。プロペラが小さすぎると、すべてがうまくいかなくなりますから。次の問題は、ドローンのローターの周辺に円形のダクトがあることです。ダクトの見た目は素晴らしいですが、実に面倒なものです。ダクトは大きな吸引力を生み出すので、ドローンを時速90kmで飛行させようとするとエネルギーをどんどん消費してしまいます。しかも、ドローンの真ん中にはとても小さなボックスがあります。これだと飛行時間は10秒程度でしょうね」
かくしてシネマティックドローンと呼ばれた機能は、デザイナーによるばかげた“思考実験”で終わってしまった。
なお、ポールスター6の航続距離については、現時点では具体的な説明はない。少なくとも800V対応の充電機能があるので、充電についてはそれなりにスピーディーに済むはずだ。
