ビルケンシュトックが250年の歴史を振り返る書籍をリリース
ドイツ発フットウェアブランド、ビルケンシュトックは靴づくりの歴史を数えて、今年で250周年を迎える。これまでのヒストリーを編纂した書籍『The Evolution of a Universal Purpose and Zeitgeist Brand』をリリースする。プロジェクトを担当したCCOのヨハン・グッツィにインタビューをした。

1774年、ヨハン・アダム・ビルケンシュトックが「臣民の靴職人」としてヘッセン州ランゲン・ベルクハイム市の教会の公文書に登録されるところからビルケンシュトックの歴史がはじまった──。もとい、実際に公文書に記載されていたのは兄のヨハネス・ビルケンシュトックであった。
これまでずっと事実だと思われ、伝え続けられていたことが違っていた。250年という長い歴史を持つビルケンシュトックのこれまでの記録は口述や伝承に依るものが多かった。2024年3月に刊行された『The Evolution of a Universal Purpose and Zeitgeist Brand（普遍的なパーパスとツァイトガイストを掲げるブランドの進化）』は、ビルケンシュトックの歴史をリサーチし直して、研究した書籍だ。約500ページのボリュームで、ファッション産業でも異例のヒストリーブックとなる。この大プロジェクトを担当したCCOのヨハン・グッツィは、開始当時の思い出をこう語る。
「最初のきっかけは2016年にあった同僚からの連絡です。昔の書籍やメモ、資料が色々あるから整理したいけど、収納する場所がないから見てほしいと頼まれたんです。当時、時間をつくれなくて、2カ月後に見た時に、これはしっかり調べて、保管すべきだよなと直感したんです。そこからあらゆる大陸より歴史家を集め、プロジェクトとして本格的に動き出しました。教会に行って1774年の公文書や資料を見直したりというのを、アンドレア・シュナイダー・ブラウンベルガー博士率いる15人の歴史研究家とともに行っていました。250年という歴史の長さもさることながら、アメリカのセクションもあれば、日本のセクションなどマーケットごとに掘り下げたほか、年代でもわけています。8年かけて社史を編纂しました」
調べる中で事実ではない事柄、たとえば1774年の文書に記載されているのが弟ではなく兄の名前だったことなどが判明した。また、ファッションとのつながりも意外な発見だったという。
「ビルケンシュトックでは、2013年にセリーヌと取り組んだデザイナーブランドとのコラボレーションが、ファッションとの最初の協業だと思われていました。しかし、歴史研究家たちが調べていくと、1980年代からファッションとの関係性があったことが判明しています。日本でも1980年代にビルケンシュトックとコラボレーションしたブランドがあるなど、色々と発見がありました。2013年にCEOに就任したオリヴァー・ライヒェルトが、ファッションとビルケンシュトックの関係性について『カラダにとってのアスピリンみたいなもの』と表現しています。解剖学に基づき、足の健康を促進するフットウェアが、ファッションとリンクするのが意外と古くからあったという事実に面白さを感じました」
長い歴史のなかで、ビルケンシュトックが変わらなかったこと、変わり続けたことはなんだろう。
「変わらないところっていうのが、フットベットですね。これはずっと変わりません。ビルケンシュトックは、人体の解剖学に基づいていて、自然な歩行を促すことを大切にしていますので、発売当初から変わっていないことが今回のプロジェクトでもわかりました。大きな変革という意味では、元々ビルケンシュトックは長らく家族経営を行っていました。2008年に打診され、2013年にはじめて創業家以外の人間としてオリヴァー・ライヒェルトがCEOに就任しました。そこからグローバルに対してどのようにマーケットにあった物を提供していけるかみたいなところを考え始めて、会社自体がグローバルで変化しはじめていきましたね。日本でもジャパンオフィスを設置し、ブランドのコミュニケーションをとるように変化していきました。ただグローバルがセントラルで一括管理するのではなく、ローカルを尊重しています。別注やコラボレーションなど、なにが正しくて、正しくないのか。その土地のマーケットを知っているのはローカルのチームなので」
インタビューは、つい先日オープンしたばかりの「ビルケンシュトック新宿コンセプトストア」の店内で行われた。会話の途中、何度もグッツィは「ストアにある土壁のフレームは、日本のクラフツマンシップからインスピレーションを受けました」など、ローカルに関わる話題に何度も触れた。おそらく250年の歴史からの学びはより他者を理解することにつながったのかもしれない。ビルケンシュトックが今も好調な理由がわかった気がする。
