　10月14日は「鉄道の日」。1872年のこの日（当時の暦で明治5年9月12日）、新橋と横浜との間に日本初の鉄道が正式開業したのを記念したものだ。「陸（おか）蒸気」と呼ばれた英国製の機関車は当初、全長29キロを53分かけて日に9往復した。運賃は最も安い席でも、全区間で米が10キロほど買える値段だったという。　横浜から陸蒸気に乗って新橋に到着した乗客たちが、モダンな駅舎を出て目にしたであろう風景が、この写真だ。明治初めに新婚旅行で日本を訪れた米国人夫婦が土産として買って帰った写真の1枚で、「東京の新橋と呼ばれる鉄道駅の駅前」と手書きされている。　写真を見てみよう。しゃれた街灯に鉄製のフェンス、その外側に擬宝珠を備えた橋が見える。広い通りが奥へと延び、しゃれた柱を備えた建物と街路樹が両脇に並ぶ。これは、現在の銀座通りを新橋側から撮ったもので、手前に見えるのが新橋だ。江戸時代初期に東海道の整備の一環として汐留川に架けられたものだが、今は橋も川もない。　この一帯は鉄道開業の半年ほど前に、大火災で焼失した。燃えない街を目指して、新政府は道幅を広げ、沿道にれんが造りの洋風な建物を建てていく。そして翌年のうちに、「銀座煉瓦（れんが）街」と呼ばれる街並みが完成。街路樹として松や桜が植えられたが、うまく育たず、後に柳に植え替えられた。こうして、東京の玄関となった通りは新しい時代の息吹を発信する舞台となっていく。 ※ナショナルジオグラフィック日本版10月号「日本の百年」より。
