日本製鉄が去年6月に買収したアメリカの大手鉄鋼メーカー「USスチール」は22日、東部ペンシルベニア州にあるモンバレー製鉄所におよそ30億ドル、日本円にして4700億円余りを投資する計画を承認したと明らかにしました。

老朽化した設備を刷新することで、年間の生産能力がおよそ220万トンから350万トンに増加するとともに、より幅広い種類の鋼材を生産できるようになるということです。

会社は必要な許可を得たうえで建設に着手し、2029年後半に生産を始める予定だとしています。

USスチールのブリットCEOは「われわれはモンバレー製鉄所に世界最高水準の技術を導入し、顧客のために新たな生産能力をつくりだすことで、次の世代に向けてアメリカの鉄鋼業を強化していく」とコメントしています。

日本製鉄はUSスチールなどを通じて2028年末までにアメリカでおよそ110億ドル、日本円にして1兆7000億円余りを投資する計画を掲げています。
