ノートPCブランド「ThinkPad」が30周年、その激動の歴史で生まれたマシンの数々
いまからさかのぼること30年前。コンピューターの歴史に残る重要なマシンが、1992年に神奈川県大和市で誕生した。持ち運び可能なコンピューターの理想型を追及すべく、当時の日本IBM大和事業所で開発された「ThinkPad 700C」である。

日本のエンジニアたちが研究開発を牽引してきた「ThinkPad」ブランドの歴史は、このThinkPad 700Cが92年10月5日に発売されたときから始まった。黒いボディに入力しやすいキーボードを備え、赤のトラックポイントで操作する独特の操作体系は、いまも一部に熱狂的なファンをもち続けている。
そこからさまざまな“名機”が生まれ、ものづくりのDNAは2005年にIBMからレノボに事業が移ってからも引き継がれた。厳しい品質基準は当初から定評があり、“拷問テスト”とも呼ばれる厳しい試験を経て発売される点も変わらない。
ノートPCの黎明期からインターネットの時代へと激動の歴史を歩んできたThinkPad──。その30年の歴史のなかで生まれたマシンの一部を写真で紹介しよう。
