コクヨ、割り箸を"板"に再生したオフィス家具
コクヨは、カナダの企業であるChopValue Manufacturing Japanと共同で、使用済み割り箸をリサイクルした内装材を使ったオフィス家具の開発や検証を4月から開始する。

ChopValue Japanは、使用済みの割り箸をリサイクルし、板状の素材に加工して家具や内装材を製造する循環型ビジネスモデルを展開する企業。2024年11月から川崎市内に日本初の工場を稼働させている。
今回の取り組みでは、ChopValue Japanの独自技術により日本国内で回収した割り箸を高品質な内装材として再生。この内装材にコクヨのオフィス家具の構造を組み合わせることで、デスクやテーブル、ラックなどを開発する。
第1弾の試作品として、使用済み割り箸をリサイクルした内装材(t=25mm)を、天板サイズ1,600mm×800mm(幅×奥行き)、天板サイズ直径760mmに成形し、テーブルを制作した。今後、オフィス家具商品として必要な機能や品質、製造方法などの検証を行ない、自然由来の素材を生かした美しい質感と品質の両立を目指す。
今回の取り組みにあたり、コクヨの働き方の実験場「THE CAMPUS」において、使用済み割り箸が施設内でどの程度破棄されているかの計測も開始。3月の実験では、1日あたり約260本が破棄されており、約30日間で天板1枚分に相当する量であることが確認できた。
自社オフィスで排出される使用済み割り箸を実際に回収し、オフィスでの資源循環の実例を示すことで、自社社員を中心に環境意識の啓発と行動変容の促進も図っていく。
ChopValue Japanでの建材製造過程では、廃棄物を高機能な素材に低コストでリサイクルし、二酸化炭素を固定。接着剤なども環境に配慮した材料を使用し、製品のライフサイクル全体での環境負荷低減も実現している。
今後コクヨは、割り箸以外の廃材を活用した新素材の開発など、サステナブルな製品の可能性を広げ、環境性能と実用性を両立した環境配慮型の商品ラインアップの拡充を目指す方針。
