アメリカとカナダが関税をめぐり激しく対立するなか、トランプ大統領は五大湖の1つオンタリオ湖の名称を「アメリカ湖」に変更する大統領令に署名しました。カナダのカーニー首相は400年以上前からの呼び名だと反発しています。

アメリカとカナダの間ではトランプ政権がカナダからの幅広い品目を対象に50％の追加関税を発動したのに対し、カナダ政府がアメリカからの鉄鋼などに最大で50％の関税を課すことを明らかにし、対立が激しくなっています。

こうしたなかトランプ大統領は27日、五大湖の1つでカナダの州と同じ名前のオンタリオ湖の名称を「アメリカ湖」に変更する大統領令に署名しました。

署名にあたりトランプ大統領は「カナダは長年にわたり、貿易面でわれわれから不当な利益を得てきた」と主張しました。

これに対しカナダのカーニー首相は27日、SNSへの投稿でオンタリオの名称は400年以上の歴史があり、両国の建国以前から使われていたとして「現実に即した呼び名は過去、現在、そして未来もオンタリオ湖だ」と反発しました。

トランプ大統領はかつてメキシコ湾の名称を「アメリカ湾」に変更する大統領令にも署名していて「われわれには湾と湖があるので、あとは海だけだ。太平洋や大西洋の名前も変える必要があるかもしれない」とも述べました。
