JAXAは、小惑星探査機「はやぶさ2」の拡張ミッションにおける最初の小惑星探査として、小惑星「トリフネ」のフライバイに成功し、撮影した画像を公開した。小惑星探査機「はやぶさ2」は、2014年12月にH-IIAロケット26号機によって打ち上げられ、小惑星「リュウグウ」を探査した後、2020年12月6日に地球へ「リュウグウ」のサンプルを届けている。はやぶさ2はその後も飛行を続け、「拡張ミッション」として探査機の運用を継続。今回の「トリフネ」フライバイは、その最初のミッションとなる。探査対象となった小惑星「トリフネ」には、2026年7月5日、18時30分(日本時間/誤差±1秒)に最接近し、フライバイに成功。はやぶさ2は、トリフネの中心からの距離1km程度を、秒速約5km(トリフネに対する相対速度)の超高速で通過(フライバイ)しながら、その撮影に成功している。実際の最接近距離などは後日解析される。撮影された画像では、トリフネは岩が2つ繋がったような形状をしており、JAXAでは「雪だるまのような形状」と表現している。科学機器による観測は、ONC-T(光学航法カメラ)による観測が6月半ばから開始されており、6月20日には「トリフネ」が撮影されている。その後、最接近時刻の1時間ほど前から、NIRS3(近赤外分光計)、TIR(中間赤外カメラ)、LIDAR(レーザ高度計)による観測も行なっていた。観測は「トリフネ」に最接近する直前まで行なわれ、「トリフネ」通過後には行なっていない。現時点は、サイエンス機器で取得したデータの一部のみが通信によって地上に伝送されている状況で、今後の運用で、残りのデータを地上へ伝送することになる。詳細は下記の記事で掲載予定。
