メルセデス・ベンツの新型「CLEクーペ」に今尾直樹が試乗した。今や希少な2ドアクーペの魅力とは？

2023年7月にドイツ本国で発表され、本年3月に日本での発売されたメルセデス・ベンツの新しい2ドアクーペ、CLEの試乗会が東京・六本木にあるメルセデス ミー東京を拠点に開かれた。
印象を述べると、新しいCLE200クーペ・スポーツはとっても乗りやすくて実用的な、フル4シーターの2ドアだった。
新型CLEは、これまでのCクラスとEクラス、それぞれのクーペを統合して生まれた新規モデルである。改めてサイズを確認しておくと、全長×全幅×全高＝4850×1860×1428mmで、Cクラスクーペよりも1634mm長くて50mm幅広く、23mm高い。Eクラスクーペとの比較では15mm長くて全幅は同じで、2mmだけ低い。2865mmのホイールベースはCクラスクーペより25mm長く、Eクラス・クーペよりは8mm短い。2865mmという数値は現行Cクラスセダンとまったく同じだから、CLEはCクラスのセダンベースということになる。
CLE200の場合、パワー・ユニット(PU)はC200用ではなく、E200用を採用している。どちらも車名は200だけれど、C200の排気量は1.5リッター、E200は2.0リッターで、500cc異なる。ごく簡単に申し上げると、CクラスのシャシーにEクラスのエンジンを載せて、より高い動力性能を得ているのがCLE200なのだ。
で、それがどんなだったか？ という具体的なインプレッションに入る前に、話をちょっと戻して、Cクラスセダンとボディ3サイズを較べてみよう。やっぱりクーペの見どころというのは1にデザインだから、である。そうすると、CLEは95mm長くて40mm幅広く、ゲゲッ、7mm高い！ そうなのである。長いフロントのボンネットに300SL由来のふたつのパワー・ドーム、フロント・グリルが前傾したシャーク・ノーズに、空力を意識してより寝かされたAピラー、ためらうことなく後方に向かってスーッと降るルーフのライン、そして少々長めのリヤのオーバーハング……。いかにもフロントエンジンの後輪駆動クーペ、を思わせるスポーティでエレガントなプロポーションは、「センシャル・ピュリティ（官能的純粋）」なる最近のメルセデスのデザイン思想に基づく、とされていて、いかにも現代のメルセデスのクーペらしいカタチをしている。
でありながら、大人4人がちゃんと乗れる居住空間を確保している。とりわけ後席は、頭上空間はミニマムながら、足元には比較的余裕がある。座高が低くて足が長いひとならなおさら大丈夫。トランク容量も十分で、メルセデスによるとゴルフバッグが2個入るという。後席背もたれは可倒式でトランクスルーになっており、スキー板等、長尺物を入れることもできる。
後席へは前席の肩口に設けられたストラップを引っ張ることで、より簡単に出入りできる。前席が電動でスーッと前方に移動してくれるからだ。この「イージーエントリー」システムはメルセデス初採用だというから、ちょっと意外である。
だけど、アレです。後席への出入りは4ドアに較べたら当然厄介で、2ドアクーペのオーナーたる者、その不便さを受け入れる度量が必要になる。その点以外は、クーペで不自由なことはなんにもなさそうだ。このかたちが好き。という好き者が選ぶ車型がクーペであっても、一定の実用性を備えている。それがメルセデス・ベンツの伝統ってヤツなのだ。
