CORTIS──K-POP

Source

The 1st EP『COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES』は、米国音楽チャート・ビルボード200で初登場15記録し、リリースから4カ月でSpotifyにおける累計再生3億回を突破した。 ──「GO!」 と尋ねられ、メンバーから『Love(MARTIN)』『Money(KEONHO)』『Happiness(SEONGHYEON)』『Freedom(JAMES)』『Peace(JUHOON)』という言葉が出てきました。 JAMES:「GO!」

Composed of five members, CORTIS is the first group in six years to debut from BIGHIT Music, home to BTS and TOMORROW X TOGETHER. These rising rookies have a fresh and creative style, glowing with a new kind of charisma that transcends the traditional definition of K-pop. GQ Japan sits down with the “young creator crew,” who are deeply involved in their own songwriting, choreography, and even videography, to discuss their musical sensibilities and sources of inspiration. ■A stunning debut As JUHOON puts it, “K-pop is more of a culture than a genre. There are no specific genres or boundaries within it.” True to his words, CORTIS has their own vision for K-POP. The globalization of the genre has accelerated as Korean artists and content continue to dominate the world stage, elevating Asia’s presence in the music market. Today, we’re at a juncture where artists must evolve and develop K-pop's conventions to further expand the market. Amid such changes, they debuted in August 2025, bringing a new perspective to K-POP The predominantly teenage “young creator crew” contributes to every aspect of the process, from songwriting and choreography to videography. For MARTIN,JAMES,JUHOON,SEONGHYEON,KEONHO, the most important thing is expressing their authentic selves. They avoid typical styles and expressions when making music, focusing instead, as KEONHO says, “on what only we can do.” Rather than making music based on concepts established by others, they develop their very own. Although they were worried that they “might be seen as too new,” as SEONGHYEON notes, their first EP, COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES, released in September 2025, debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 and surpassed 300 million streams on Spotify in just four months. Even though CORTIS just debuted, they’re expanding beyond Asia and quickly capturing the world’s attention. ──Your first EP is marked by its bold blend of different genres, like hip-hop, rock, and pop. Did you incorporate these genres intentionally, or did they come about organically? JAMES: We made over 300 songs for this EP; it's the result of our selecting the songs that best express who we are. JUHOON: There’s rock and hip-hop in COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES, and “Lullaby” is psychedelic soul. The music we listen to every day also influences our songwriting. Their debut track, “GO!,” which also became a viral dance challenge on social media, is characterized by its trap beat and synths. It surpassed 10 million YouTube views within 27 days of its release, propelling the group’s rise to fame. ──How was “GO!” made? Do you have any anecdotes about making the song? JAMES: At the end of songwriting camp, the producer was playing a great melody on the keyboard, and the melody for “GO!” was born instantly. I remember how excited we got and how quickly we completed the song. MARTIN: Because it was a pre-release single that came out before the album, we wanted it to declare to the world, “We’re about to take over!” We wanted it to communicate our ambitions, like a challenge we’re issuing. As the title suggests, “What You Want” embodies the group’s aspirations. Their explanation of the song’s creation reveals just how organically they write their music. ──“What You Want” has a punchy boom bap beat with a psychedelic rock-sounding guitar on top of it. The lyrics are memorable too. Is there anything you keep in mind when incorporating this sort of sound? MARTIN: When we had a studio session with American rapper Teezo Touchdown, he asked us what our life goals or aspirations were. I said, “love,” KEONHO said “money,” SEONGHYEON said “happiness,” JAMES said “freedom,” and JUHOON said “peace.” Teezo said he liked the keywords, and we went into the recording booth and made the hook. We came up with a good melody by freestyling and having a fun session, almost as if we were joking around. This song was complete once we combined those keywords. ──On songs like “JoyRide” and “Lullaby,” the lyrics talk about young men dreaming of being free, fleeting everyday moments, and friendship. Why did you decide to include such a wide range of emotions and themes in the album? JAMES: “Lullaby” is the last song on the album, so we kept the visuals and instrumentals simple; I recall recording it using just two tracks. So, we wanted to reflect ourselves as we are in the lyrics. SEONGHYEON: The instrumentals of “JoyRide” are mellow and emotional, so we tried writing the lyrics in a rough way. We thought about our raw emotions at the time and expressed our desire to race away from our mundane everyday lives. ──Which moment regarding Color Outside the Lines are you most proud of? JAMES: I felt really proud when we had our release party. Many of our fans came to see us, and it became a really meaningful event for us. That was when I felt happy to be doing this as a job. SEONGHYEON: We tried many new things when making this EP. I think it has something different from traditional K-pop music, a color unique to us. We wondered how people would receive the album and worried we might be seen as too new, but I’m grateful that so many have reacted positively. ──I’m sure you got a lot of reactions every day after releasing your debut EP. Do you have any memorable stories to share? Also, how do you handle these reactions? KEONHO: When I went back to my parents’ home after promoting COLOR OUTSIDE THE LINES, I went outside without thinking anyone would notice me. Then, I went to a store and was asked, “Are you KEONHO from CORTIS?” It was a strange experience. Also, it made me happy when our seniors did the dance challenge and complimented our songs. While CORTIS’s ambitions and freshness are unique to teenagers, they also possess an extremely professional side, calling themselves a “young creator crew.” Even before the group’s debut, Martin worked as a producer for TOMORROW X TOGETHER, ENHYPEN, LE SSERAFIM, and ILLIT. James contributed to TOMORROW X TOGETHER and ILLIT’s choreography and songwriting. Their creative spirit extends beyond music to choreography and videography, a talent they’ve nurtured since before their debut. ■A young creator crew that excels at doing things themselves As evidenced by MARTIN’s statement, “It was a natural thing for us to try adding visuals to the music we made,” CORTIS belongs to the digital-native generation, which grew up using smartphones. Their know-how regarding filming, editing, and posting content and vlogs on social media is deeply ingrained. ──It’s rare for a group to do everything from making their own music, choreography, and music videos. What are the benefits and struggles of that? JUHOON: The best part is being able to express our colors most effectively. We can show our authentic selves more when we do things ourselves rather than have someone else do them, and when we write songs together, we get a lot of ideas, which leads to making higher-quality music. What we struggle with is that our opinions sometimes clash, but I think that’s also a good thing because we can choose the best idea after discussing it among ourselves. ──What have you been listening to recently? Have you watched any films that stood out to you? JAMES: I recently watched an animated film called Redline. I go back and watch it whenever I want to be inspired, feel like I need something, and want to be immersed in a fantastical world. KEONHO: This is my first time visiting Japan, and it was my dream to listen to city pop here one day. I listened to it in the car as we moved from place to place, and it was great. Between being photographed at a vintage shop, the group shops for clothes. Their style isn’t that different from the outfits they wear onstage. It's clear they wear clothes they truly think are cool when performing. When discussing their tastes and inspirations, the members reference their curiosity and discoveries in their daily lives. ──How do you find new music and fashion to inspire you? JAMES: Today, there are so many avenues to get information, like magazines, the news, phones, and TV. Among the many things I come across, new styles and fashion, and interesting situations inspire me. KEONHO: We film ourselves joking around and use that for our music videos. We write lyrics about interesting things that come up in conversation. The biggest source of inspiration for me is having fun every day. Walking around the city and moving around in a car are also inspiring. JUHOON: Trends come and go so fast now, which is actually why I feel like I get inspired by old things. Timeless things that stand the test of time still feel fresh today, so I listen to old songs and watch old fashion shows. MARTIN: In terms of fashion trends, I think styles from the 2010s are making a comeback. The trends from the start to the end of the 2010s are interesting, and I think American rappers had a particularly strong influence on them, so I look for different ideas online. CORTIS’s creations are an extension of their daily lives, and their ideas derive from what they find interesting, both online and offline. Their music and music videos demonstrate how they implement things that bring them joy. Their showcase in Tokyo last November was held in a small music venue with a capacity of only a few hundred people (the same venue as BTS’s first Japanese showcase); they had a blast with their fans within arm’s reach, sweat and all. ──I heard you’ve already started working on your next release. How’s that going so far? JAMES: I believe we’ve been changing little by little after having experienced a lot since our debut. I think our lyrics, choreography, and visuals will also grow like us on our second album, so we’re also excited about what sort of album it’s going to be. Just like “What You Want” shows us, the group goes out to get what they want with their own hands. That's what makes them distinct. The emergence of this new generation that effortlessly modernizes the perfected K-pop system is surely going to be the catalyst for the music scene in Korea and Asia at large to undergo massive changes. If said changes are successful, a new kind of culture will come forth and evolve K-pop. No one can keep their eyes off CORTIS’s every move. ■Q&A with CORTIS to MARTIN ──I heard you started making music for fun, and here you are today. Do you have any advice for people your age who are interested in music production? MARTIN: If you make music and feel like it’s hard or not fun, try doing these three things. One: Switch to a newer DAW. New software offers many convenient tools, and you can use them like a game to make music while having fun. Two: I think it’s also a good idea to play instruments and create sounds as you play around on them. Three: I want you to try making friends with whom you can share your dreams and goals. When you make music with several people, like rappers and producers, a strong synergy can be born. I'm able to make music with the rest of my group. It’s so fun, and I’m blessed. to JAMES ──Do you have any fun anecdotes about choreographing? JAMES: We choreographed “GO!” in LA, sweating in a practice room that didn’t even have AC, if I remember correctly, with not a lot of time until the deadline. It's rare for our process to go smoothly, but the choreography for “GO!” went the smoothest. We felt a strong sense of accomplishment because we completed it so quickly. After we were done, we were like, “Yay!” I remember how we all went out to eat samgyeopsal afterward. to JUHOON ──In a previous interview, you said you were drawn to Hedi Slimane. What about him do you find intriguing? JUHOON: Big silhouettes are very much in style right now, but I started researching Hedi Slimane after coming across him on social media and becoming interested in him. I learned that he makes skinny-fit clothes because he himself is slim, and he uses that as a strength. I also don’t really like chasing trends. One day, I felt like wearing something slim-fit. So, I immediately bought secondhand skinny jeans. to SEONGHYEON ──I heard you produced over 100 songs so far. Do new songs pop in your head all the time? SEONGHYEON: I listen to different kinds of music every day, so I get an idea for a song when I’m listening to music. New song ideas don’t just pop in my head out of the blue (laughs). Our producer sometimes gives us suggestions for the tracks; for example, he came up with the basic beat and guitar riff for “What You Want.” We added a boom bap beat to it to make it unique and came up with lyrics that matched the song. to KEONHO ──Although you’re the youngest member of the group (maknae), it seems like you take on the role of coming up with and making content. Is there anything you’re mindful of when it comes to the age difference between the others and yourself? KEONHO: When someone needs to say or do something as a representative of our group, I use the fact that I’m the maknae to my advantage and sometimes ask James or Martin to do it, like “Bro, please!” But in our day-to-day life, we don’t really think about who’s older or who’s younger. I think it’s great how we can say what we honestly think to each other when we start making things. CORTIS A five-member boy group that debuted under BIGHIT MUSIC, the label home to BTS.
