400ccレーサーレプリカの最終形態は、今も魅力的だ!!! ホンダ VFR400Rに迫る
1970年〜80年代に発売された国産旧車が、“絶版車”と呼ばれ人気だ。当時憧れていた世代はもちろんのこと、今どきのヤングライダーたちも“カッコいい！”と注目する絶版旧車の魅力を、俳優の飯島寛騎と元バイク雑誌編集長・カワニシが語り合う。今回は400ccレーサーレプリカの最終形態!? ホンダのV4マシンが登場！

河西啓介（以下、カワニシ）：飯島寛騎くん、1970〜80年代の絶版旧車を紹介してくこの企画ですが、今回のバイクが発売されたのは89年、つまり絶版旧車としてはもっとも“新しい”部類のモデルなんです。ちょっとややこしいですが。
飯島寛騎（以下、飯島）：はい、ホンダのVFR400Rですね。あの頃の“レーサーレプリカ”の中でも、ひとつの頂点みたいなモデルですよね。
カワニシ：ご名答。ちょっと解説すると、初代VFR400Rが登場したのは86年、エンジンはVF400F譲りの399cc水冷4ストローク90°V型4気筒ながら、カムシャフトの駆動方式をそれまでのチェーン式からカムギアトレーン式に変更し、高回転高出力化を可能にしました。またフレームはコンベンショナルなダブルクレードルだったVF400Fに対し、レーシングマシンのRVF400を思わせるアルミツインチューブに。つまり排気量こそ400ccですが、当時大ブームになっていた“鈴鹿8耐”を走るレーサー“そのまま”のようなスタイルで、ライダーたちをコーフンさせたのです。
飯島：フルカウルに丸目二灯のライトがいかにも“耐久レーサー”っぽいですね。そして、なんといってもカラーリングがカッコいい！
カワニシ：まさにホンダのレーシングマシンを彷彿とさせる白・赤・青のトリコロールカラー。もうちょっと解説を続けると、VFR400Rは早くも87年に「NC24型」モデルチェンジされて、その最大の特徴は「プロアーム」と呼ばれた片持ち式のスイングアームなんです。
飯島：確かに、後輪のホイールを支えるアームが1本しかありませんね。コレって、なんのためですか？
カワニシ：耐久レースでタイヤ交換をするときには、片持ちのほうが圧倒的に有利なんです。レースの映像で見る、メカニックが一瞬にしてタイヤを換えてしまうシーン、ああいう時ですね。まあ、一般ライダーにとってはほとんど関係ありませんが……、あえて言えば「レーサーみたいでカッコいい！」というのが最大の利点かな。
