報道のあり方、倫理観とは──ミュンヘンオリンピック襲撃事件を題材にした映画『セプテンバー5』
1972年、ミュンヘンオリンピックの選手村を、パレスチナ武装組織「黒い九月」が襲撃した。そのテロ事件を元に描いた映画『セプテンバー5』が公開される。まるでドキュメンタリー作品のような緊張感のある映像から、ライブ中継がはらむ危うさや倫理観を問いかける。

映画が始まると、ABCのロゴが画面いっぱいに映し出される。舞台は1972年9月5日、ミュンヘン・オリンピックの会場、選手村のすぐ近くに設置されたスポーツ中継のコントロールルームだ。エアコンが壊れてしまったため、モニターを注視しているABCスポーツのクルーたちの額には汗が滲む。本作の撮影は8Kのデジタルカメラだが、ヴィンテージレンズの使用や、フィルムカメラのカラーグレーディングを参照することで、70年代当時の画面のルックを再現している。そうした映像の質感によって、タバコの煙が充満し、ひどく暑そうな室内の光景は、戦争中だった当時のベトナムのジャングルを彷彿とさせるほどだ。
スタッフは一息つこうと、外に繋がる扉を微かに開けて、新鮮な夜の空気を浴びながらタバコに火をつける。すると、選手村の方からタバコの火よりも眩しい光の点滅と、銃声の音が鳴り響く。パレスチナの武装組織「黒い九月」がイスラエル選手団を人質に取ったのだ。
■息つく暇もない95分
『セプテンバー5』は、ABCのスポーツ番組クルーが人質事件の生中継に挑んだ1日を、TVスタジオの室内だけで描いた作品だ。室内劇と聞くと地味な印象を受けるかもしれないが、本作は編集とカメラワークによって、驚くほどのダイナミズムを生み出している。スポーツ中継のスイッチングのように、様々なアングルから撮られたショットを巧みに切り替えながらスタジオ内を映し出す編集、全編を通してカットの長さは平均2秒から4秒とかなり短く、そこに手持ちのカメラワークの躍動感が加わることで、画面は絶えず動きながら、まるでアクションシーンのようなテンポ感で、あっという間に95分の上映時間が過ぎ去っていく。この息つく暇もない95分は、テレビクルーたちの仕事を観客に追体験させる。
■拡散されるストーリー
22時間にも及ぶ生中継、まともに食事を取る暇もなく、モニターの前で仕事をしながら、眠気覚ましのコーヒーを飲んで、不味そうなサンドイッチを胃に流し込む。ヘッドセットを装着しながら、手には受話器、もう片方の手にはトランシーバーを持って、つねに各部署と連携を取らないといけない。そんな極限状態のスタジオの中で、キーワードとして頻出する言葉が「ストーリー」だ。本作は短い秒数のカットを繋ぐ「編集」が印象に残る作品だが、劇中のTVクルーたちがやっていることも「編集」の作業なのだ。
正しい場所にカメラを置き、撮れた素材を繋ぎ合わせながら、ひとつの映像作品にする「編集」という工程は、多かれ少なかれ作り手が伝えたい「ストーリー」を反映してしまう。はたして、それをテレビで放送した時、その「ストーリー」は誰のものになるのか？ 後半にかけて焦点が当たるのは、編集で作られたストーリーと、それを拡散する危険性だ。人質は無事か？人が殺される瞬間を放送していいのか？ファクトが取れていない情報を拡散していいのか？倫理と視聴率の狭間で葛藤しながら、ミスが許されない緊張感の中で、TVクルーたちは決断を迫られる。恐ろしいのは、この作品が描いている問題が決して他人事ではないということだ。かつては多くのスタッフが関わり、TVスタジオで行われていたメディア報道が、今や私たち一人ひとりの手の中にあるスマートフォンで簡単にできてしまうのだから。
■終わりのない生中継
9億人が目撃したと言われているミュンヘンオリンピックのテロ攻撃の生中継を、本作はメディア報道の転換点のひとつに位置付けている。「黒い九月」のメンバーを「ゲリラ」ではなく「テロリスト」と呼称することを決めるシーンでは、TVクルーが言葉の使い方に慎重になる様子が印象的だ。当時、「テロ」という言葉は強すぎる表現として慎重に扱われていたが、今では一般的に使われている。その変遷には、メディアと時代の変化が如実に表れている。
ミュンヘンオリンピックの事件の後、イスラエルはテロの首謀者であるパレスチナ人に対する報復作戦を開始する。この作戦の詳細はスピルバーグ監督の『ミュンヘン』（2005）で描かれており、同作の撮影監督を務めたヤヌス・カミンスキーによる青みがかった画面の画作りは、『セプテンバー5』にも引き継がれているように感じる。両作を併せて観ることで、この悲劇的な出来事をより多角的に理解できるだろう。
テレビはテロの恐怖と政治的メッセージの拡散を助長し、2001年9月11日の同時多発テロでは、ワールドトレードセンターに旅客機が突っ込む映像が世界中に発信された。現在、その役割はソーシャルメディアに移行し、イスラエル軍によるガザ地区への攻撃の映像が絶え間なく拡散されている。本作が描いた22時間の生中継は、今では24時間365日放送され続け、パレスチナ問題と同じように終わりが見えない。終わりのない生中継が私たちの日常となった今、カメラの置き場所によって、歴史の見え方は変わると自覚することがますます重要になってくる。『セプテンバー5』はそのことを強烈に体感させてくれる作品だ。
