坂口さんは「研究は個人の努力だけでなくほかの研究チームの発見からヒントを得ることもある。若手研究者は自分に力がないと悲観せず、楽天的に、大きく構えながら研究を進めてほしい」と話しました。
また、北川さんは「今の研究者は雑務に追われ、研究時間が確保できない。研究に集中できるシステムをつくりあげる必要がある」とそれぞれ、若手研究者への支援を訴えました。
国は来年度の当初予算案で国立大学の研究者の人件費や設備費などに充てる運営費交付金を9年ぶりに増額したほか、基礎研究への投資の拡充などを検討しています。
こうした動きについて北川さんは「基礎研究はすぐに結果が出るものではなく、数十年単位の時間が必要なので長いスパンで研究を支援する仕組みを検討してほしい」と訴えました。
また、坂口さんは「公的な支援も大切だが、アメリカで研究していた際には民間の財団にも支えられた。日本でも研究への支援が文化として社会に根付いてほしい」と民間の支援の重要性を指摘しました。
