TDKは、メタオプティクスミラーを用いたスマートグラス向け網膜直接描画(DRP：Direct Retinal Projection)ディスプレイの実証に成功したと発表した。メタオプティクスミラーを使ったDRPディスプレイの実証は世界初という。10月13日から開催される「CEATEC 2026」でデモ機を展示する。メタオプティクスミラーは、ナノサイズの反射体を平面上に配置した超薄型ミラー。厚さは150nmで、可視光の透過率は80%。眼鏡レンズへの埋め込みを想定しており、従来の網膜投影型スマートグラスで必要だった、目の前に配置する曲面ミラーを置き換えられるという。反射体ごとに光の反射角を制御することで、さまざまな角度から入射するレーザー光を網膜投影に必要な方向へ反射する。可視光波長より薄い構造とすることで、光干渉による虹模様の発生も抑えるとしている。従来の曲面ミラーが外観上の制約となっていたのに対し、透明なミラーをレンズ内部に組み込めるため、通常の眼鏡に近い外観のスマートグラスを実現できる。また、対面する人の側への映像漏れがないことも特徴としている。 TDKはこれまで、網膜投影向けに超小型フルカラーレーザーモジュール(FCLM)や、4K映像に対応可能な可視光フルカラーレーザー制御デバイスを開発している。今回のメタオプティクスミラーは現時点ではモノカラー表示に対応。今後数年以内にフルカラーでの実証と量産化を目指す。半導体と同様のプロセスで製造できるとしており、量産時のコスト低減も見込む。またTDKはQDレーザと事業協力契約を締結。QDレーザの網膜投影技術と、TDKのレーザー光源や制御デバイス、メタオプティクスミラーを組み合わせ、スマートグラス向けRGB光源モジュールや光学エンジンの開発を進める。
