KDDI、NTTドコモ、ソフトバンク、楽天モバイルは11日、各社が保有・構築する「5G(第5世代移動通信システム)」のミリ波利用エリア拡大に向けた共同検討を実施することに合意し、覚書を締結した。ミリ波は高速・大容量通信を実現する一方で、電波の直進性が高く遮蔽物の影響を受けやすいという特性を持つ。そのため、ミリ波の通信エリアを広げるためには多数のミリ波基地局などが必要となるが、その早期構築は、通信事業者に共通する課題となっている。今回の検討では、各社がミリ波のエリア展開を自ら進めることを前提としながら、通信事業者の垣根を超え、より多くの利用者へミリ波による快適な通信の提供を目指すもの。通信事業者間における、5Gミリ波基地局の利用エリア拡大に向け、実現可能性や実現時の効率的な運用の仕組みを検討・評価。特に、5Gミリ波基地局や中継器などに関する技術・方式についての検討が想定されている。この取り組みに依らず、各社が5Gミリ波に関する設備をそれぞれで展開する一方で、展開した設備を有効活用できるよう、具体的な検討を進める。
