白色矮星から放射される謎の「高エネルギーX線」の正体が見えた
太陽質量の8倍以下の質量をもつ恒星は、最後が近づくと大きく膨れ上がり、表面の温度が低下して赤く見えるようになる。このような状態になった恒星を「赤色巨星」と呼ぶ。

赤色巨星は大量のガスを周囲に放出する。このガスが、中心に位置する中心星が放射する紫外線に照らされて光り輝いて見えるのが「惑星状星雲」だ。
名称に「惑星」と入っているが、惑星とはまったく関係がない。小さな望遠鏡で観測していた時代に、小さな望遠鏡で観測するとまるで惑星のように見えたところから、天文学者ウィリアム・ハーシェル（1738年～1822年）によってこのように名付けられた。
惑星状星雲の中心に位置する中心星はやがて冷え、あとにはかつての恒星のむき出しのコアが残される。この余熱で光り輝くコアが「白色矮星」である。
そんな白色矮星のなかでも、今回はみずがめ座に位置する惑星状星雲「らせん星雲」の中心に存在する「WD 2226-210」にまつわる謎の現象を紹介したい。この白色矮星が周囲を公転していた惑星を引力で破壊し、その残骸がWD 2226-210に落下して高エネルギーX線が放射されている可能性があることを、メキシコ国立自治大学などの研究チームがこのほど突き止めたのである。
白色矮星「WD 2226-210」は、地球から650光年ほど離れた惑星状星雲「らせん星雲」の中心に存在している。この白色矮星から非常に高エネルギーのX線が放射されている現象をドイツのX線観測衛星「ROSAT」などが観測したのは、1980年のことだった。この高エネルギーX線は、それから40年以上にわたって観測され続けている。
しかし、WD 2226-210のような白色矮星からこのような高エネルギーX線が放射されることは通常ない。このため、原因については長きにわたって謎になっていた。
そこで研究チームは、ROSATやチャンドラ、欧州宇宙機関（ESA）のX線観測衛星「XMM-Newton」などの1992年から2002年にかけての観測データを分析し、その原因の解明を試みた。
