新生ビッグヤンクが始動──ベルベルジン・藤原裕はなぜこのブランドを手掛けたのか
ベルベルジン・ディレクター、藤原裕が新たにビッグヤンクを手掛けることが発表された。古着マーケットで熱い視線が注がれるブランドをどのように調理したのか。仕掛け人の寺本欣児（てらもと・きんじ）にも話を訊いた。

「ビッグヤンク」は、1919年に米・シカゴで誕生したワークウェアブランドだ。創業してからワークウェアに関する数々のディテールを発明し、商標登録を多数獲得。第2次世界大戦時にはオフィシャルサプライヤーの役を担うなど、大きな成長を遂げる。だが月日は過ぎ、時代の荒波とともに姿を消す。その後、1990年代になると古着マニアたちが、同ブランドのシャツに見られる”山ポケ”や”ガチャポケ”といったディテールに注目し、再評価の波が訪れる。昨今では、ヴィンテージシャツブームの一端を担っているほど存在感をあらわにした。そして昨年、寺本欣児率いる「サーティーファイブサマーズ」が商標権を獲得し、ブランドに新たな息吹を吹き込む。
寺本は屈指のヴィンテージコレクターとして知られ、パリの人気ブランドであるアナトミカを日本で展開。2005年には80年代に消滅したとされる幻のアウトドアブランド、ロッキーマウンテン フェザーベッドを復活させるなど、多くの話題作を手掛けてきた。新生ビッグヤンクになぜ藤原裕を起用したのか。
「構想自体は以前からありましたが、お互いにタイミングが合わなくて。ちょうどニューマニュアルの一連のプロジェクトがひと区切りつくと聞き、声をかけました。（藤原）裕は古着への造詣が深いし、何より“ビッグヤンク愛”に溢れていますから」と寺本は語る。
一方、ディレクター就任のオファーをもらった藤原は、その時に大きなプレッシャーを感じたと回想する。
「最初、自分が手がけることでブランドの価値を落ちたらどうしようという不安がありました。でも、（寺本）欣児さんが大量に所有するヴィンテージサンプルを見て、自分だったらこういう風にアップデートしたいなとアイデアが湧いてきました。それになによりも他人には負けないほどビッグヤンクが好きですから」
藤原と寺本の長年の関係性や、ビッグヤンクへの強い想いが新たな一歩を後押しした。かくして新生ビッグヤンクがはじまる。さて、ビッグヤンクのワークシャツは好事家にとってブランドの代名詞ともいえる存在だ。藤原はどのように調理したのだろう。
「ファーストコレクションでは、シャツを中心に全6型、準備をしています。ディテールのデザインを変えたり、サイズ18インチでオーバーサイズ気味に着ることができるシャツもあるなど、ワークシャツの根源を維持しながら、モダンにツイストしました。価格帯は約3〜4万円で、サイズ展開も幅広く考えています。7月23日から行われる展示会はバイヤーだけでなく、オープンスタイルなのでぜひ実際に手をとって見てもらいたいです」
また寺本に、藤原が手がけるファーストコレクションの印象について訊くと「なんというか、さすがだね」と笑って答える。
「デザインのポイントやサイズのバランスの取り方など、いいところをついてくるなと。ヴィンテージへの造詣の深さは知っていたけど、きちんと今の服作りをしてきた経験も生かされているのかなと感じました」と続けた。
新生ビッグヤンクは将来、グローバルでの展開も目指すという。
「去年初めてパリのファッションウィークに行って、すごく刺激を得ました。ファッションショーはもちろん、期間中に現地でさまざまなブランドが展示会を行っているなど繋がりが広がる場所だなと感じたんです。ビッグヤンクでもいつか実現させて、世界で勝負できるブランドにしたいです」と藤原は語る。
寺本も「いずれ世界制覇はしたいね」とうなずきながら、あらめてビッグヤンクの未来についての願望を滲ませた。
「これは私がブランドの商標権を持った理由でもあるのですが、ひと言でいうと“Passed Down to the Next Generation（次の世代に受け継がれる）”。ビッグヤンクを次の世代に繋いでいくということですね。私は彼と比べ、ひと回り以上年齢が離れています。これからは裕自身が自分よりもひと回り以上年下の世代に、ビッグヤンクの魅力をきちんと伝えてほしい。そして裕から伝えられた人が、また次の世代に伝える──。歴史に埋もれることなく、ずっと愛され続けるブランドであってほしいという願いです」
100年以上前にアメリカで生まれ、日本で再起動したブランドがどこまで広がるのか。新たなバトンは今、誕生したばかりだ。
