ソフトバンク、AIで無線ネットワーク性能向上を実証
ソフトバンクは、AIを無線アクセスネットワーク(RAN)で活用する「AI for RAN」の研究において、3つのユースケースで検証を行ない、性能向上効果を実証できたと発表した。

ユースケースとは、アップリンクの信号をAIで補完して無線性能を上げる「アップリンクチャネル補間」のほか、AIでMU-MIMOの計算効率を上げる「サウンディング参照信号の予測」、AIでビームフォーミングの予測精度を上げる「AIを活用したMACスケジューリング」の3つ。
「アップリンクチャネル補間」では電波暗室での実験により20%の性能向上を確認。「サウンディング参照信号の予測」では9%、「AIを活用したMACスケジューリング」では13%の性能向上が確認された。
10%や20%といった性能向上は、従来なら追加の大規模な設備投資で実現するレベルのため、今回の研究の成果は、エンドユーザー向けの通信品質の向上だけでなく、無線ネットワークのキャパシティ拡張への貢献が期待され、結果的に基地局への投資を抑制することが期待されるとしている。
ソフトバンクの無線ネットワークへの導入は慎重に進められる方針。2025年度から、数局で開始する計画になっている。
