WBC＝ワールド・ベースボール・クラシックは、東京での1次ラウンドで、台湾が韓国に延長10回タイブレークのすえ、5対4で勝ち、2勝2敗としました。韓国は1勝2敗となりました。この結果、仮に日本がこのあと2連敗して台湾、韓国と2勝2敗で並んだとしても日本はこの2チームに直接対決で上回っているため、この時点で日本の1次ラウンド2位以上が確定し、準々決勝進出が決まりました。
