AIの利用拡大に伴い、アメリカで建設が相次ぐ大規模なデータセンターについて、東部ニューヨーク州は14日、新たな建設許可を最大で1年間凍結すると発表しました。電気代の高騰や水不足などへの懸念に対応するためで、凍結に踏み切るのは全米で初めてだということです。

ニューヨーク州のホークル知事は14日、新たな命令に署名し、AIなどの利用拡大に伴って州内ではデータセンターの需要が急増していて、サーバーの稼働や冷却のために大量の電気や水を使い、電気代の高騰や水の枯渇につながる可能性があると指摘しました。

そのうえで、大規模なデータセンターの建設について、新たな規制の枠組みが整うまで建設許可の手続きを最大で1年間凍結するとともに、地域に利益を還元する仕組みを構築するとしています。

データセンターは、AIの利用拡大に欠かせないことから、アメリカ各地で建設が相次ぐ一方で、反対運動が急速に広がっていて、全米州議会議員連盟によりますとニューヨーク州以外の14の州の議会でも規制が検討されているということです。
